Know who you are. And build on that. This is what Ricoh is doing. The beauty of being small is, that you don't need to run after trends. Once in a while the trend is with you, once in a while it is against you. This is quite different to larger companies, who have to be where the trend is, at least to some major portion of R&D spending. The downside of small companies is, that they are always on the edge.
R&D spending, product innovation will slow down to the pre-2000 times. And Ricoh won't need to adapt. While the big onces have to adapt. And the tears will fill rivers. And may kill one or the other big one.
