I had similar focus struggles with my FA 77 but then discovered the problem seemed to be AF.S as the K-3 chose poorly at small apertures. I switched to AF.A 27 point with focus point select and am now happy. AF.C has not been explored.

Our lake froze over last night. The trees this morning had cotton candy hoar frost coating them and the morning sun caught the pines nicely for the FA 77. The second photo shows two tundra swans loafing on the new ice. Crop of FA77 image.
