Okay, whoever it was that raised the bar on this thread... stop it! :p

Some really great stuff of late. I gotta say, that train sequence PiratStian posted stopped me dead in my tracks (sorry for the pun). Simply awesome.

Which brings us to my feeble work. A few Neopan 400s from the weekend outing to our retiring baseball stadium.

Maybe the 8800F comes with better software? Or just works better - it is a grade up from the 4400F. The 4400F came with "Canoscan Toolbox 5.0", and you see the result above. It does fine for B&W though.

Thanks Douglas. To be perfectly clear though - that's posted just for example's sake of what the other's colors *should* have been. That photo itself is digital - from my K20D.

Thanks Javier.

I gotta tell ya though, when I scanned the first strip of that film through the 4400F with the Canon software I thought I'd completely screwed up the processing...

because that frame should have looked a lot more like this (from K20D):

Well, I gotta say shooting color film is a whole new ballgame for me. Other than a roll of Gold200 I burned up to test my PZ-1 when I got it last fall I had not shot color film since 1995.
Not being one to go into anything half way the following images are from:
- my 1st rolls of Portra 400VC ever,
- first color since '95,
- first roll of color I processed myself,
- and first roll of color film I have scanned.

Out of all those the last was the killer. For the record - Canoscan software SUCKS unless you really really like blue/purple images. But VueScan and a bit of trial and error over the past couple days gave me these. Not the best, but not bad IMO for a 4-way first time out.

I just grasped for a straw on your thread, Robin. :)

In another slightly off-topic spin ... I just got 5 rolls of Portra 400VC delivered and I'm about to load up the PZ-1. Kodak MAX400 is the most "exotic" I've done with color film. Any tips for the uninitiated? Photo requests? :)

Beast or not, I'm gonna have to pick up either a 645 or 67 one of these days soon. Local shop has a couple of both in the consignment case - they taunt me!

Could very well be spot on there, Steve. These are the first rolls of 100 I've shot - bought 2 rolls each of Delta, Plus-X, Acros and TMAX. Both the Delta and Plus-X came out with a bit more grain than I expected and I am merely assuming it's the dilution (63:1) of HC-110 that contributed to it.

Here's a couple more off the first roll of plus-x thru the PZ-1 and Tam90...

haha! DIY processing changed my whole outlook and continues to open my eyes up about differences between films and developing chems and procedures. I picked up a bottle of TMAX developer today. Didn't plan to; I was just going in for a bottle of Kodafix and a pack of archive pages...

Thanks for the compliment. That was the last frame of the roll.

Yesterday was Plus-X 125. Man, this stuff has a wicked fast developing time I had to go with HC110 @ dilution H (half strength) just to get into the 5 minute zone.

I'm not sure if I'm liking HC110 with these lower (sub 400) speed films, especially at higher dilution ratios to extend developing time. They seem a bit grainier than I expected and I'm wondering if a less reactive developer like D-76 or TMAX would treat them better.

:) Sometimes words won't convince even the most hopeful of listener. Sometimes you just gotta experience it for yourself.

Heck, 30-odd years ago when my dad first put a camera in my hands I *couldn't wait* for the day he'd let me put a cartridge of "real film" (color) into my instamatic. Now in my fourties, I look forward to every frame of B&W that comes out of my two film bodies. :)

Sometimes I wish I'd taken photography more seriously as a kid and wonder what might have happened if I had. But in the end I am who I am and I learned everything I have in life because of the path I took and I wouldn't want to change that even if I could.

I recall seeing that post and biting my tongue (err, keyboard). :)

If I'm going to shoot C41 B&W, XP2 is my choice. BW400CN does a good job and is much easier to get, but XP2 just has a higher quality feel.

So now that you have a taste you gotta go for the real deal and get some genuine silver halide. It's like the difference between a can of Coke from the vending machine and a fresh fountain draft. :) Of course, then you're gonna want to start processing your own film too because there's nothing quite as sweet as hanging fresh negs up to dry...

Thank you, Javier. There's a little motion blur (or perhaps slightly oof) but it's one of the better from that roll. I was showing the wife the scans the other night and when that one came up her words were something like "and now we're back to 1950" :)

I'm in permanent film test mode I think. Ran a couple rolls of Ilford Delta 100 this weekend and processed them in HC-110 dilution H @ 10min.

1st two made with superProgram & M135/3.5

Next two made with PZ-1 & FA28-105/4-5.6 (power zoom) ...

Ahh. Thank you both. Now just have to figure out if there's a way to compensate/correct it with the 4400.

Okay, okay, a slight exaggeration in the post title. :p

I so have a question though. Notice in both shots there is a "smear" apparently on the negatives these were scanned from? 1st photo right down Nate's chest, 2nd photo it's mid-frame on the left edge.

I'm trying to pin down what exactly is causing this so I can hopefully prevent it in the future. I see it on scans from different films, different cameras and different processors ( local pro lab and myself both ). It doesn't appear on every frame nor on every strip.

I don't know the pro lab's "process" but here is mine:
After develop/stop/fix/hypo-clear steps I do a final rinse and bath in a weak solution of Photo-Flo (1ml per gallon H20) and then squeegee before hanging. The squeegee is a *brand new* Paterson and I meticulously rinse it in the solution and then shake off the excess before applying it to the strip. After drying I cut the strip into 6 frame slices and scan them with a CanoScan 4400F and import to LR2.

What the heck causes it? Is it the Photo-Flo itself? Can it be due to the slight curl of the negs causing some distortion in the scanner? Could it be the squeegee (it is brand new and treated like surgical equipment)?

I'm going to post the same Q as its own thread but thanks in advance for any help.

Pretty cool stuff, Agnostic!

So compared to B&W processing how did you find the C-41 experience? I'm feeling the tug to run some color film thru my cameras but now that I've started processing my own B&W I really don't want to send film off ever again.
