I'm beginning to think, it'd be easier to have a team start from scratch, with the SDK's for the chipsets, and build custom firmware from the ground up.
'least that way, we'd get features people want.

If I get a third, cheap, I'd try it.

That would be the different functions in stills, Some of the functions of the K-30 are not present in the K-01, nor is any need to have a display in the viewfinder.

I think the most effective use then, would be a Sticky post, with all the data in the post, maybe Adam and the Mods can look at it and figure where it'd be best to locate it here on the forum.

K-02
As others commented, it's never existed, just a wish-list of what owners want - better ergonomics, Sensor Shift in Video, functional and recordable 1080p HDMI - there's a lot of discussions on what's needed to fix video on Pentax MILC and DLSR's, and basically make it an industry leading product with what looks to be nothing more then firmware tweaks.

Excellent, post it somewhere all involved can refer too, and that'll be really useful as reference.

Yeah, I don't think one of those actually exists, we just wish it did :D

Ahhh,... the one that does the uncompressed clean feed output.

Which is basically proof that the video firmware on the Pentax's is botched, as the hardware used is capable of doing the job properly.

Can I just say, none of this works for me?

Two reasons,....
1) I own a K-01 instead of a K50
2) You guys have blown right past everything I ever knew about that level of coding,.... :D

I for one, am glad you blokes are having a good go at this project, and I can't wait to see how it all turns out - if you can match the functionality of the factory firmware, and improve on the areas the factory has let down, you will be doing a great service for all of us who aren't capable of doing the coding ourselves.
Please keep at it !

Da, that's how I usually do it, this question was to see if it could be done using an extranl 2 channel mixer and a Balanced In to USB box, for a person who doesn't want to muck around with separate recorders and syncing in post.

Personally, I'm happy getting Balanced Audio in to a Tascam recorder, and running a sync feed over to the Mic input of my camera when needed - Happy to sync to a Clapper Board ( Slate ) myself.

Shodan: Spit-balling ideas about - how hard would it be to have the camera's USB port accept a digital audio input stream to inject in to the video Codec ?

It took a team of four or five something like 18 months (or more) to write the firmware for the Bolex D16.
I'd hate to think how many dev's write software for BMD,..
Aja's team took more then two years to do the Cion's development.

One Shodan, alone, can succeed, but the rest of us need to be exceptionally patient and supportive.

Silly question for the K30 users,.. and thinking ahead to what code could possibly be swapped between similar cameras,..

Does the K30 have HDMI, and if so, does plugging in to it switch the camera to playback only, like on the K-01?

Keep up the efforts Shodan :)

Right-oh,... that's as complex as heck!

And it's not 'real' dynamic range, it's multiplexing two different ISO settings to simulate a larger dynamic range.
Sure is an interesting approach though. I'm curious about how the multiplexing deals with the higher noise in the ISO1600 lines of vision, when compared to the ISO100 lines.

Dynamic range is a function of the sensor and the amplifiers attached to it - I'd very much like to see where it's quoted that ML can increase the Dynamic Range.

I do know that on some bodies, ML can allow access to higher ISO settings, shutter speeds, and to shooting 'Raw' video. Raw video is basically full dynamic range and data per video frame, rather then having the dynamic range limited to REC709 standards.

And just to be clear for anyone reading who doesn't know, Dynamic Range is the number of stops difference between the darkest and lightest element on the frame that are not under or over exposed - the upper and lower limits of brightness that the camera can see at any particular ISO/Iris/Shutter speed combination.

Errr, nope, I use it way too much. :D

However, once you have mastered the K30, I'd be willing to contribute to the next campaign to get a K-01 to experiment on.

Both use the Prime-M processor.
Besides the lack of optical viewfinder, I think the other biggest difference is the AF method.

Ahh, yes, I see now after having caught up.
Question tho', and others can weigh in,..
With the exception of the viewfinder, aren't the guts of the K30 and K-01 similar, especially regarding the processing hardware and sensor?
( Couple of K30 owners I've done stuff with are under the same impression )

While reading ( I'm up to page 5) any links to PHDK for K-01, if it's at all possible?

Edits:

Da, I've used a 550D with ML and a PK-EF ring to use my own lenses on a short film that's in post-prod now, ML is a massive improvement over the Canon firmware, turning an 'okay' camera in to a brilliant little film making package.

I'd love being able to adjust my K-01 down to the same levels - with custom overlays for 2.39:1 framing, audio meters, frame rates and shutter speeds,...

Keep up the good work Shodan, it will be interesting to see if the coming official firmware updates start including the features everyone's asking for, now that there's going to be competition from user-made firmware.
