I got myself the J1 on UK Amazon as a camera I can pop into a casual jacket and I have to say it is a really decent camera. If you want to keep it compact go for the version bundled with the 10mm lens. I have the 10-30mm zoom version.
The sensor size is smallish; a 2.7 crop factor compared to 35mm so the 10mm lens is the equivalent of a 27mm lens in old money. As Barondla indicated a lot of the controls are in the menus but I find as I use the camera more often it is getting a much easier to do things manually. That said the auto settings are very reliable, the autofocus is lightning fast and once you switch off the default sound effects it's practically silent.
If you are looking for shallow depth of field, the small sensor means this is hard to achieve, so if that's your thing look for a bigger sensor system.
As far as I have read the J2 is a minor upgrade of the J1 and was quickly replaced by the J3 which had a high pixel count and inclusion of those rubbish effects filters so beloved by people who post online.
So unless the J2 to is close in price to the J1 I would always go with the J1
