Yup. First one is the Helios. Some shots swirl more than others I've found. It seems to depend on focal depth mostly, and also background subject.

Great shots guys. Loving this thread at the moment.

Thank you very much everybody.

I reckon that for how cheap they are, every bokeh lover needs a 44-2 in their kit.

I don't mind at all. It was a Helios 44-2 Preset. The last few batches of photos I've posted in this thread have been produced with this lens. I've committed myself to using it for a month or so exclusively until I know it inside out. It's quite a quirky, clunky old thing, but oh boy does it do bokeh well. If it was just a tad sharper, easier to use, and well made as my Revuenon 55mm, it might take over top spot as my favourite lens.

The funny thing is, that even with the genuine Pentax adapter, there is still about 1/10mm play between the adapter and camera body, probably exacerbated by the fact that because of the adapter, the body of the lens doesn't sit flush with the silver lens seat on the camera body. This also means the autofocus-motor contacts on the body are exposed while the lens is attached. The focusing ring also requires slightly more torque to turn than it takes to unscrew the lens from the adapter ring. I've overcome both of these problems, perhaps only temporarily, by rolling up about 20cm of cling wrap into a tube with a thickness of about 8mm, and tying it in a knot around the base of the lens.

This gives enough friction to prevent the lens from unscrewing whilst I'm trying to focus, covers up the little electrical contacts on the body, and blocks any potential gaps into the body caused by the play of the adapter ring.

Pretty ghetto huh? Works though. Thinking plumbers tape might be another good solution, seeing as it has no adhesive to leave residue.

Oh, also, the aperture ring is numbered backwards! f/2 is actually marked f/16 and so on! The ring also doesn't click to set apertures, it is quite loose, and slides without increment between f-stops. Haha!

Thanks Jon! It seems to have slowed down a bit, so I thought I'd keep it trundling along.

I'll try to get out and take some more shots today. The weather is beginning to warm up a bit here, and I can already smell Spring, so flowers should start popping out.

Subject in focus, and then pure bokeh.

edit: compression really isn't kind to "the blur" is it? for a sharper version of the bottom one: Pure Bokeh
