Visited the Studebaker Museum a couple of weeks ago. Cool cars. Wish I'd brought a polarized filter to cut some of the glare, but I got some decent photos nonetheless. :)

I think this was the first time I've taken my 10-20 out since getting the 15mm limited. I think it did a better job with creative distortion of the hoods than the 15mm could. Still selling it, though.

Gotta add this one, too, despite catching too much of my reflection in it. Those bullet nose convertibles were too much fun.

Has anyone taken any good photos exploiting the distortion inherent in ultra wide lens closeups? I don't recall seeing any on here, but I know I've taken a few here and there for fun, but only with my nikon version so I won't post them here. (closeup of a scrabble game, my dog's nose, a punch bowl, etc). I'd love to see a few from the very talented people here -- do you take requests? :)

The 4-5.6 lens doesn't "spin" either, in the way you're implying. The focusing ring spins when autofocus is on, which is annoying, but nothing that stops you from using a polarizer or whatever.

Plenty of samples from both lenses here. Primary difference seems to be the extra aperture blades in the 3.5 make prettier stars out of light sources. Also i think the 3.5 has an hsm motor so it's quieter and probably heavier, and doesnt spin the focus ring (which still annoys the heck out of me).

The 1/3 stop difference on the wide end (I assume you don't want this primarily for shooting at 20mm) shouldn't be that big an impact.

People have gotten great photos with both. I'd use the extra $200 on something else, or go for the 8-16.

Set them to export in sRGB instead of ProPhoto or AdobeRGB. sRGB is much more widely supported.

Tried to sell my photography at an art fair for the first time today. Only sold one piece - a 16x20 print of the photo below, taken with my Sigma 10-20MM.

Thanks, guys! The excessive HDR was intentional, but I'll see if I can get a similar "scary" feel without going so overboard on it. I pretty much just plopped it into NIK software's HDR Efex Pro 2 and put it somewhere between the "Sinister" and "Grandma's Attic" presets.

I'm still not sure if I like the pentax version of this lens over my prior Nikon version. But I got some decent photos out of it when I took it on vacation to Baltimore. Here are a few:

Chester Street Rowhouses

Seadog Cruises

Harbor, Aquarium, Constellation, etc

USS Constellation (plus water taxi and the giant Domino Sugar sign to the right)

Photo taken on 2013-08-03 at 021538 - using a PENTAX PENTAX K-5 with a Sigma or Tamron Lens at 10 mm-1-13 sec at f - 4.0-ISO 1600 -_.jpg

Silo Point (grain silo turned into luxury condos)

My wife took this one -- photo of me at the Silo Point Five Wine Bar (silly name is a reference to the first wine bar they opened, the 13.5 wine bar)

Nice!

If they're long-ish exposures and you don't have one handy, you can just stick something dark over the top half of the lens for part of the exposure. The camera strap would probably do the trick (presumably while it's on a tripod. I can't imagine holding the camera steady while popping the strap in front of the lens.

I forget where I first learned that, but a quick google turns up this link, which mentions it as #8:
9 Weird Photography Tricks That Actually Work!

Hm. If it was WR, I'd do it even though I'll miss the extra 2mm. Maybe I'll just keep this for now and hold out for the 12-28 they're supposed to announce this year, and if it has WR, upgrade then.

So... I just got a Sigma 10-20 4.5-5.6 from Amazon today. I've been using the Nikon version for a couple of years and been very happy with it. Given that, I'm really confused by the pentax version. Obviously I missed some important information.

Positives: Much better ergonomics for the front lens cap and the hood. (Center pinch, and the hood has texture to help you grip it from the base instead of the top where you might smudge the lens). It also weights noticeably less

Negatives: It doesn't have HSM. I can live with that, but the damned focus ring is spinning on the lens when I autofocus. And it isn't very happy if I'm touching it when that happens. And if I want to adjust the focus manually, I have to turn the switch on the front of the camera to MF or fight the motor - there's no override in the lens.
I'm guessing this is why the nikon has the focus info in a window and the pentax has it on the outside of the ring.

So -- you guys presumably love this lens... doesn't any of that annoy the living daylights out of you? Because I'm thinking of sending it back and getting the 8-16 despite no way to put an ND filter on it, or the Pentax 12-24 despite the reduced width. Or the Tamron 10-24, except I'd heard it had the spinning autofocus which was a factor in deciding on the 10-20mm.
Do you just get used to it? Never use manual focus? Please, let me know. :)
