My son now has my K-50 (and DA 35 2.4) which is why I haven't been posting here much. But it's great to see the great results Aaron keeps getting from it!

Last summer me and the boys (well mostly me) built this bird house. At our previous home our bird houses were only inhabited by wasps, but we had great hopes for this one! First it wasn't a small one someone else built - we built this one with good woods and had some plastic under the roof to keep the inside dry, mimicking what birds would find in the midst of a tree.

So we did have a couple of nuthatches come and make it their home! The chicks were LOUD! As of this week the little ones have grown up and are gone but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the two birds coming in and out of the birdhouse bringing food to the little ones. Looking forward to it next year, I hope they'll come back.

Great pup pics as always. That's a great lens isn't it? I kind of miss my big chunky Tokina version of the 19-35. I suspect the Tokina and Cosina (labeled Promaster, etc) versions of this lens were really the same lens with different cases, another joint Tokina/Cosina effort.

It doesn't seem the fungus is doing much harm, and the sticker surely makes for some interesting bokeh... I would take the sticker off and you are probably going to like that lens a lot.

If I must give up my secrets...

I actually start off with the RawTherapee "Pop", mostly because I like its base curve, take off some of that extreme vignetting and adjust the exposure back to normal levels - then I add the Kodachrome 64 Generic film emulation from HaldClut. The result is too contrasty (DA Limited+Polarizer contribute to that) so I back off the contrast a LOT and adjust the saturation as well as needed.

But the stars here I think are the DA 35 Limited, and this old Hoya Linear Polarizer that I have that has some pretty insane levels of color and contrast... once you tame these in PP I think you get some really nice colors with an extended dynamic range that shows details from the shadows naturally as you reduce contrast.

I started experimenting with these settings now with my K10D and the results are also very promising!

Thank you :) But again, what you perceive as processing is only half because of processing, the other half is the DA 35 Limited and the Linear Polarizer.

I like Linear Polarizers. I have a couple Nikon linear polarizers (big beasts!!!) at 52mm and 62mm that I need to play with my Sigma 30 1.4 Art and my Tokina 24 2.8.

For my DA*16-50 I just bought a used B+W Kaesemann CPL, so no linear polarizer there... I'm mostly going for convenience with the 16-50 and linear polarizers need a bit more attention to make sure you are getting the right exposure. But they're not as bad as people think and 90% of the time the camera gets the exposure correct.

There was an older, larger Sears 50 1.7 that was made by Chinon. Then there's the rebranded Rikenon - which you know it's a Rikenon, because it looks exactly like the Rikenon :) and it's a great performer. Some here in the forums have said the older rebranded Chinon was even better but I haven't used one...

Those Rikenon 50 1.7 lenses are actually really good - I had one branded as Sears. On par with the Pentax-M 50 1.7 with an even more interesting rendering - but also a bit less flare control. But the flare is actually really good!
Now I want one again

Who would put a sticker on the rear glass?? lol... and why haven't you taken it off already? I think some lens cleaner should take care of that.

To be totally honest with you, you're probably seeing more a difference in lenses than in the cameras themselves. And a bit of the camera process, which goes both ways - I'm sure there's some that prefer how Nikon processors render the world.

If all you get is the K-50 with the 18-55mm lens, you will get a little bit of it depending on shooting conditions, as it's a good lens, but not great. When I had it sometimes it would surprise me with a great looking picture but at other times I would be a bit underwhelmed, especially compared to my primes (I think Nikkors are similar, their 18-55 is good but not great either). Better lenses give better results and some of the old glass gives outstanding clarity. Here's where the Pentax advantage kicks in - with the D5200 you can't meter old manual lenses, and the film-era/early digital (AF/AF-D) Nikkor lenses won't autofocus. You get more backwards compatibility with Pentax, if you choose to go that route, which can give you good results on a small budget.

A K-3 as a back up for a K-50 huh? Lots of love for the ol' K-50 :) It's a great camera indeed, I enjoy mine more than I thought I would. That sensor is pretty sweet and the ergonomics are actually very nice.

I keep thinking about replacing my Tamron 70-300 LD DI with either the older DA 55-300 5.8, or the FA 80-320... and sometimes I consider the FA 100-300 5.8 as well (though I read that the build quality is just not very good on that one). I really like how the old 80-320 renders in some scenes - the colors are pretty rich and I've read that the AF is actually pretty good for moving objects - you seem to have a bit of experience with that :)
But honestly I don't know if any of those can get anywhere near the quality I get from my manual focus lenses - I know the Tamron can't get anywhere near my SMC-M 100 2.8, SMC-M 200 f4, SMC-A 70-210 f4 or even the Takumar Bayonet 135 2.8, which is a great lens, much better than I think people realize.
So a year later, I haven't pulled the trigger on a newer tele zoom yet...

On our recent trip to Sanibel Island, the K-50 was chosen over the K-S1.... as I didn't want to risk sand or salt entering anywhere in the K-S1.

Here's some pictures from the trip... all K-50 with DA 16-45mm f4 (if 24-70mm is perfect for the full frame folks, 16-45 outta be perfect for APS-C ;)).

Of course they don't look like this straight out of camera, I created some custom profiles in DarkTable, but now that I have those, it's usually a one-click process. The 2nd one from the top of the page took a little more work to get some shadow details and looking like the original scene, but not more than a couple of minutes. But her out of camera JPEGs aren't too bad either - in fact the first picture was a JPEG from the camera that I did a little enhancement in Darktable. It's my favorite zoom, but I haven't had the 17-70 or 16-85, or any of the Sigma offerings, to see if they're better.
