I don't think the HD 18-50mm f/4-5.6 ever came as a kit lens with any camera, but unless I create a club for it, I wouldn't have a club where I would post its images. I think most people consider it a kit lens anyway :) |

18-55 DA AL II More Blue and Yellow by ChristianRock, on Flickr Orange and Blue by ChristianRock, on Flickr
It seems like as long as you keep the focal length under 50mm, the kit lens has very good close up abilities and is very contrasty. 50mm and up and you lose both sharpness and contrast very quickly, I find... so I try to keep it at around 45mm. These pansies are tiny, by the way. The stems behind them are daffodil shoots that are just starting out.

I'm with you. I like the images from the Mark 1 better, even if it doesn't test as well. If anyone one offered me a Mark 1 for my AL II, I'd trade in a second.

Yeah it's a lens that can surprise you. A lot of times the pics look generic, but then all of a sudden a great one pops out, just like yours, and we get amazed at what it can do.
Unfortunately for my kit lens, my Tokina 19-35 is a much more reliable performer, so I just use that instead. Yet, now that I got a 2nd body for my wife, the kit lens lives on in her bag :)

Thanks PaulH. And wow, what a nice place to visit! I'd love to go to Alaska sometime (in the summer of course!)

I have to say that the kit lens (DA AL II in my case) works much better with the K-r than it did with the K20D. I don't know why, maybe it's the lower resolution - which isn't all that much lower, anyway. But even at 18mm I'm getting what I consider acceptable results.
This is at f8, 35mm, right in the middle of the range, so you know it's gonna be good :) garden kit lens by Christian, on Flickr

Thanks for the tips, Luis :) I'm getting a K-r this week which has better dynamic range than my K20D, so I should be able to get better quality shots after I do PP. Right now if I can't put a fill flash on it, it's pretty much lost...
I see you're in Portugal, I'll be there next month and I hope I'll take some nice pictures of the beaches and Lisbon :)

Took the kit lens to the backyard today. Did some shooting at various lengths. My findings:
. At f/8 it's very good from 24mm to about 40-45mm. Still good at about 50mm. At 55mm, it's still not bad, just not great - unless it's close to the minimum focus distance - then it's still great! And at 18mm, my copy is pretty bad.
. Wide open - don't even try. It's a waste of time...
. A warming filter really helps. I'm using a Nikon 2A and the one thing I didn't like - how the greens look - was taken care of. Of course it also robs a stop of light, so I'd rather the lens have a better look without an extra filter. And that makes the DA 17-70 appeal to me. That might be my next lens...
Here's a shot at 45mm. Yes there's a bit of PP to it... birdhouse kit lens by Christian, on Flickr
