The best I could speculate is that it doesn't permit a noob with a MF lens to take badly exposed pictures and blame the camera. They have to refer to the manual and see all the steps needed for stop down metering, etc.
Similar with the 1/180 or 1/200 flash sync speed.

It's almost as if it's a test. If you know this setting, you probably also know enough to realise stop-down metering is an issue, and can't blame the camera for exposure problems.
It *is* a bit puzzling.

Change Menu Item 26 'Using Aperture Ring' to 'Enable'.
