Sending it away to get the aperture block problem fixed would have been about $100, but you're now looking at about $300 for an entire second hand K-50, right?
Any professional repair is surely going to be more than that.

Ok, let's just generalize as 'stiction'.
This explains why using Eneloop batteries or firing repeatedly in burst mode overcomes it for some.
That replacing an $8 solenoid fixes it is great, but of course someone has to do it.

This has been noted in the past.
It's why our survey asked recipients for both actuations and time since manufacture.
Magnetization rather than physical wear seems to be the issue, Photogem.
And by best guesses, it affects only a minority of owners, but well above 5 percent if that's any kind of industry standard.
