Honestly, after spending time over there, I want to be sprayed down afterwards, like de-lousing.

You'll be able to generate it, Rob, just choose your scene. It's like sunflare in any lens - shoot the right scene and it'll be there!

What serious testers would do is measure CA in a RAW file for the same scene and compare it across brands, but that's beyond DPR. Quite frankly, they know their audience is not up to scientific rigour and fairness, it's all about page views and click-throughs to sponsored Amazon products.

And another, from Review: Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM Art (Canon EF) - The Phoblographer

The DPR review says: "The image reveals some colour fringing around high-contrast out-of-focus elements - predominantly magenta in front of the plane of focus, and green behind - but for such a fast lens it's actually relatively low."

CameraLabs.com say: "Following is one of the most brutal tests for lenses: the sun reflecting on water. This produces extreme specular highlights which mercilessly reveal longitudinal CAs, purple fringing and coma. The new Sigma exhibits quite some green and purple fringing ..."

So, it's one standard for Pentax, another for Sigma, according to DPR 'journalists'.

Yeah, I think I said it when they did the original shoot with this lens and the notorious chain link fence pic.

You can bring on LoCA on any fast lens like this, it's the shooting situation. To imply the Pentax does it, the others don't, is practically slander.

I wouldn't have thought it was all that hard to test ... arrange a string of tiny LED lights in a rectangle sitting just inside the frame and look at the results, but almost nobody does it.

Not many reviews here or on other sites do, DW. Perhaps because it's an aberration that's more important to astrophotographers.

The official site comparison of the DFA*50, DA*55 and Samyang 50mm f1.4, which controlled the picture scenes, says:

"At the widest, F1.4 aperture, there is little to differentiate the three lenses. The D FA*'s blur seems creamier, particularly at the bottom right. For all three lenses, highlights are well formed and no harsh patterns are visible. The differences between the three lenses are subtle at best. Even when the aperture closes, highlights preserve their round shape and the out-of-focus texture remains creamy for the three lenses. All three produce superb bokeh ...

… The three lenses under test produce pleasing bokeh, with creamy textures devoid of harsh shapes, and well-formed highlights. The D FA* has a small advantage over the other two lenses at the widest aperture values."

Aren't we lucky to have the choice? One of them is an cheap manual focus lens.

All Pentaxians should be able to shoot beautiful pictures.

To be honest, unless the reviewer knows what they're doing (like Mike Tompkins at Image Resource or Bernard Dery at this forum), I'd rather a website did no review of a product at all.

Stick to 'news' of a new product - that's code for rewriting a company's press release. :)

Once you get similar subjects and backgrounds instead of cherry picking - anyone can shoot a picture to discredit any lens - the results are also similar.

That's simply the distance to the objects, Class A, the DFA would deliver the same effect, even slightly more so since its focal length is 5mm shorter. :)

?

I find the DA*55 bokeh to be beautiful, with nine curved aperture blades. Vignettes less than the FA50, and one of the first guys to shoot the DFA* beside Kerrick James noted that you have to zoom in to tell the difference between the DFA* and the DA*. Doesn't stop me wanting one, though. :)

Something between 15mm and 25mm, for 2019 or later.

Good rant to be sure, Tellwill, but a couple of things.

You may not realise but the K-1 is no more pixel dense than the K-5, and less pixel dense than the K-3, so I don't know how much air that lets out of your tyres.

I have zooms, but I also have the 24mm Samyang f1.4 and the 24mm Sigma f1.8 Macro, you can buy these if you like. The Samyang is of course Manual Focus, if that scares you.

I guess eventually an UW prime will appear, but it's not on the roadmap, and a hint about as to why would be the results of the 2018 Pentax Forums member survey - 1600 respondents.

It was advertised on the front page - have you seen the results?

The sort of prime you say is essential was relatively unpopular.

People wanted a short tele, then normal, primes.

So, what you think might be a critical need right now in the lineup, might not be to other buyers, that's all. :)

The standard Japanese double Gauss designs for fast primes (all brands) don't get sharp until stopped down … the DFA 50 Macro is sharp wide open but it's a trick because it begins at f2.8.

What makes the DFA*50 different from the K50 f1.2, DA*55, FA 50 f1.4 and so on is the lack of that soft glow wide open … spherical aberration.

If you read the Development story on the Ricoh website, designer Masazuko Saori put an extra corrective group to the front to lift the performance of this thing up into and maybe above Sigma and Zeiss levels, never mind Canon, Nikon and Sony. Size, weight and cost wasn't his concern so he was able to do this.

And yes, the 85mm will benefit from his exciting design template. It was actually the first scheduled of the Star series, but market research caused them to do the Fifty first.

Photos from owners appearing now in the Pentaxians Facebook group.

Traditionally that is more photo and less discussion oriented in this site, and pros tend to post there (including the Ambassadors) and have no involvement here.

Luckily, WP, this is K-mount, there are other superb fifty or thereabouts focal length lenses that you can use on your K-01 instead, including ones that are a better match for its small form factor,

Sure, but it's only one stop to f22 from f16, so its help is very limited. An ND1000 is ten stops.
