Somebody's got to pay Flickr's bills, and advertising didn't do it, and neither did partnering up with Getty to make some of those 1Tb of photos available to them for licensing.
I'm a recent Flickr user, and understand we have to give something worthwhile to them in return for something worthwhile to us. :)

I'm with you Jonathan, you're not being a sales rep for Flickr, you're pointing out that in a fair world, people and companies get remunerated for the work and investment they put in. My wife torrents like crazy through a VPN, but I'll pay on Google Movies or Netflix or whatever … it hurts us financially, but not paying the content creators because it's unlikely you'll get caught just doesn't sit with me. :(

Just keep one at work or a relative's house, swap them over on a weekly or monthly or whatever basis, whatever interval you can cope with if your own dwelling is robbed or burns down or whatever. Encrypt first with BitLocker or a third party product if you have concerns.

Be careful, Dagoban, that sounds like you're doing without an off-site backup.
If you bought *two* external hard disks you can get such a thing going yourself.
