You did a wonderful test when you first got your K-1, BE.

You took one picture with your new toy and another with your K-3, just at focal lengths that gave the same field of view, and they were practically indistinguishable.

Now, it was a 'normal' scene, some packaging with print on it or similar.

You're such a good photographer that I know you don't treat your cameras like a phone, snapping away at a single stationary subject in good light in the middle of the frame, you would choose a scene and a treatment that showed off the advantages of the larger sensor. It's why I'd love to see you shooting with a 645Z.

And you know there are other people who would be better served with just m43 or even a phone because the capabilities of even APS-C are not being reflected in their photography. They'd save money and weight.

You know that a K-5 image is just a crop of the K-1 image, Vincent, so the noise and dynamic range and what's in focus, all of that, is exactly the same.

But in theory, you can postprocess more.

In downsampling to 8Mp, you can average values from 36Mp instead of 16Mp.

But this is noise reduction by software, an algorithm, the resulting JPG, it's never in the RAW file the camera has captured. :)

It does no such thing, Fogel, you've obviously never read how they get the print score. :)

They virtually make it up.

They simply apply a theoretical adjustment to the screen score based on how many pixels there are above 8Mp, it's really crude, they don't even consider sensor size.

They call this 'normalization'.

You undermined yourself in your post 815, Fogel:

"So at the same exposure a larger sensor captures more light. Which is why a larger sensor tend to give less noise in images at the same ISO as a smaller sensor."

It's about the pixels, not the sensor. They are the capturers of light in a physics formula, not the wafer.

That's why DxOMark measured 9.6dB for the noise test at ISO 51200 for the K-5 IIs, and 9.8db at the same ISO for the K-1. :)

No, this is the infamous 'Total Light' fallacy. It was rampant on DPR at one time.

The actual 'sensor' by that physics meaning is the pixel.

The wafer the pixel is on is a different size between the K-1 and the K-5, but the light gathering ability (electron well capacity) is identical in each of the K-5's 16 megapixels to those of the K-1's 36Mp.

The so-called 'pixel pitch' (an indicator of area) for both is around 5 microns.

Yep, firmware is software. The camera can never do anything (GPS, WiFi, 4k video, IBIS) the hardware wasn't capable of in the first place.

As explained before, BCN stats are nearly worthless, and should not be used in any argument, IMHO.

CIPA stats are close to definitive.

Yep, posters who want a 'me too' strategy are horribly mistaken, IMHO, Broo. It's a wonder they bought a Pentax product in the first place, it hasn't been mainstream for years!

In the Welcomes and Introductions section of this forum, we do get people crossing over from other platforms, including all the mirrorless ones, and a guy who was an Fstoppers tog of the month and convenes fashion workshops I attend occasionally here in Melbourne has just bought himself a 645Z, not a Hassy or Phase One or Fuji, and not prompted by me.

It does surprise me in an increasingly homogenous world culturally that there are still some people who have discernment, but they're there.

Yeah, as outstanding as the DFA appears to be, all fifties from all brands are good because of this.

Not much better bang for buck than something like the M50 f1.7 stopped down to f8. :)

We differ a bit here, I think. The testing shows it's not until f22 that the edges (not corners) are anywhere near centre sharpness, it's a huge dropoff in a landscape lens. Barrel distortion is 1.2% but it's notorious for field curvature. Some argue there are situations where you have to choose what's in focus in the frame, what's not.

I'd love to see its MTF curves.

It's a must take for me on APS-C with a three prime bag, having said all that.

But if I'm bothering to lug a full frame camera out the front door I've done that for IQ reasons and I want the lenses to match. :)

Similar to I'm not putting f4 zooms on my K-1, I can put my f2.8 zooms on my APS-C for those results cheaper and smaller.

Slowing down the lens is of course a compromise a designer can make to improve other areas ... It's the basis of the DA Limiteds.

Another way is to cheat - put less glass in and secretly do RAW cooking to sharpen the corners and distortion correction, even before it gets to Lightroom, so it limits what you can do in post.

Not accusing anyone in particular. (Cough) m43 (Cough) Company beginning with 'F'. (Cough)

Well, distortion is corrected by a lot of glass, so that rules out small for an ultrawide, Repaap.

I note that Nikon have a 20mm f1.8 on their roadmap. It will be a good big lens, or a weaker small one, up to the designer. :)

Lenses around the natural registration distance, the 35 to 55mm range, don't need a lot done to them. Longer than that is harder, and wider is hardest of all, as Roger Cicala says.

It's no surprise from a difficulty of design point of view, ignoring marketing, that the DFA* primes will probably come out in the order 50mm, 85mm, 35mm, and twentyish.

Yeah, one of this forum's very best photographers, Singapore's Pinholecam, did a bicycle tour in Western Australia with the K-1, FA 77, FA 31 and M20.

But for his next trip in New Zealand, I noticed he had the K-1, FA 77, FA31 and the Samyang 14mm.

That Samyang is a much, much bigger and heavier lens, and you don't want to carry any extra bulk or weight when on a bike. But he did.

Perhaps the Samyang is a good lens, and the M20 is a small one, and ultimately it's about the pictures.

I have the Voigtlander 20mm f3.5.

Well built metal pancake, a sort of Full Frame DA21.

But it demonstrates ultimately how counterproductive it can be to put little lenses on big sensored cameras.

It's got a lot of uncorrected distortion, and as the M20 has been described, needs to come down to f8-f11 for sharpness. At that focal length there's an expectation that this be corner to corner, too.

I rarely put it in the bag. :)

APS-C is all about size and cost cutting, the larger formats and the larger lenses accompanying them are in pursuit of higher IQ and sacrifice both those factors.

I have both. Horses for courses, etc.

I understand for a couple of people it's their unicorn, but it's a mistake to think that of others. We welcome opinions here, but that's far removed from market research.

The twenty something FF prime was not popular in the forum members' poll of desired products. Canon and Nikon have also gone without one in their new mount launches, it's something for the future.

They do have that as well as their 50mm f1.2, Mistral, thanks for the correction.

It's Nikon who only have a fast fifty, an eccentric 58mm f0.95.

Neither company have started with an 85mm, but like Pentax I'm sure will add one.

If you look at one of the Pentax interviews they confirm the 50mm was the most desired, so they rearranged their priorities.

The fifty isn't the heart of brands' prime systems hust because it's easiest, on FF it's the most useful.

Canon have just one prime for their EOS-R. Guess what it is? :)

Somebody recently posted a list of interviews with Ricoh/Pentax, Rico.

IIRC in more than one of them it was said that they had to do more production runs, the Limiteds got a burst in sales.

I use the FA77 and FA31 more often than I do my Sigma 85mm and 35mm Art.

They make such quality DSLRs that they're foolish not to offer great alternatives as a company like Canon suspends EF development to get behind its RF mount and comes out half-cocked with the awful first offering, the EOS R.

But you can bet that just as the K-1 development occurred in the background unknown to us, on and off over several years before the economics were right for it to be launched, Ricoh will have at least one mirrorless experiment program running in the background. Someone thought that this was the reason for the K-1 still having USB 2, that work might have in fact started before the K-3. Certainly, it was green lit so fast the K-1 shipped without the square crop mode the test units had, the EFCS was added later in firmware, and the Accelerator popped in during the Mk II release when it was perhaps always intended to be there. I've heard the Q was always designed with the O7's sensor in mind, pricing/availability let that happen later on.

Some of the Pentax employees who were involved with the K-01 or Q might still be there and working on the GR III coming out this year. The economics of sensors and EVFs has changed since then and things that they might wish they could have done back in 2012 are now more affordable.

There would be marketing debate over which format - APS-C, FF or MF - for the first mirrorless product. Whatever it is, Niche Marketing 101, it shouldn't be a me-too product, just as the K-1 was not a clone of the Nikon D810, it should have that Pentax special sauce about it. If it contains the same cost, defects and advantages of a mainstream product, might as well buy the mainstream product!
