Well, it was no problem for Aussie surf photographer Chris Hewgill with his K-3 and Siggy 150-500:

It has been shown by poll here that video is unimportant to Pentax users, and by DPR to be unimportant for Canon and Nikon users too when asked about what they wanted in the FF mirrorless releases.

It might be important to *you* as an individual, but that's not shared by any sizeable proportion of either the market or your fellow forum members, and I note you also have other products, including a GH4, for that anyway.

As for mirrorless as a concept, at the last Photokina interview, the Pentax management said:

"Ricoh feels that there will be a market for cameras with an optical viewfinder in the K-mount arena for many years to come, because many photographers prefer an optical viewfinder. DSLRs and mirrorless each have their strong points, and Ricoh is closely watching the mirrorless market and studying how users want to use their cameras and which features they expect. At this point Ricoh has not decided if they will add mirrorless cameras to the product lineup, but they don't exclude anything. The deliberations regarding mirrorless also cover the 645 format and decisions made could vary by format. The focus is on how the photographers want to use their cameras and what they expect from them; this will drive decisions about format (APS-C/FF/645) and type of camera technology for future products.

Number of points aren't a predictor of AF performance, CDW. *Coverage of the frame* maybe.

A DSLR's AF module points can be quite large and accurate because it's a dedicated system, you must make the AF points on any mirrorless small, perhaps too small, because with an on-sensor PDAF system you're actually getting missing bands and holes in your picture wherever they are.

The method is slower, Labidas.

You're missing a dedicated PDAF system, powered by the mirror.

The mirrored AF sensor can use as many pixels as it likes, the onboard PDAF pixels of mirrorless use up real estate that you cannot form a picture from. The camera will try to hide the gaps by baking the RAW, making up values (I think someone mentioned 12 percent of the surface does not read data) but this can lead to banding and artifacts, like all digital processing.

Rarely is the PDAF enough by itself … the usual is actually a hybrid of both CDAF and PDAF, introducing a delay.

As I understand it, amongst the criticisms of the EOS R and the Nikon Z7 is that the autofocus is not as fast as the 5D Mk IV and the D850 they are based on … disturbing for professionals who are being asked to put out a lot of cash and change mounts for native lenses.

You're better off coming to the market later if you're small because failure can wipe you out.

FWIW, there seems to be disappointment on the web about the Panasonic FF MILC, the Canon FF MILC and the Nikon FF MILC, despite the massive hype. Those companies may be big enough to survive the negativity and build better products in future, but similar reaction to a Pentax where the Ricoh board had made a special money grant to bring it to market would be disastrous.

In most of those cases, the crime is that the MILC is inferior to the DSLR that it's based on, and for more money.

We already had that with the K-01, which for all its charms, was inferior to the K-30.

If you read the interviews with Ricoh executives, Brofessor (listed in a thread somewhere here), it is not regarded as a priority. And at what level it will eventually be introduced - 645, APS-C, FF - is not known.

I have three mirrorless cameras already (one full frame), and my feeling is … 'meh'. :D
