K-1II review... Opportunity to get banned on DPR

It would be really interesting if it did something with data that isn’t available when we get to the post processing step. Then it would legitimately be another different alternative to the normal workflow. New choices make for advantages!

The thing that I think gets lost in all of this talk about the tests is that we wouldn’t be having this contentious of a discussion if the NR effect had been optional. In my view that decision still represents a serious miscalculation by our beloved manufacturer. Especially after prior fiascos involving NR.

So let’s get some more testing and let’s get a firmware update.

What is wrong with you? This is an inflammatory post when I have been nothing but polite. The person I quoted is a well respected technical expert who owns a business analyzing sensor data. He has also been nothing but professional on "the site that shall not be named". I have used the technique outlined because while its not fool proof I'm not about to buy a K-1 to test my K-1ii against to determine if I should swap them out.

Iso invariance - PentaxForums.com
There now I'm quoting this site. Please have some manners in the future.

I’m a long time pentax user who woke up Monday morning to the DPR review and now has a week+ to confirm I want the mark 2 over the mark 1. I shoot primarily landscapes/starscapes these days but sprinkle in a little of action and wildlife photography when I can.

I wasn’t thinking about it in depth yet. I saw the reviews comments about noise reduction and immediately thought of the situation where I would want the most noise control, astrophotography. I also remembered a thread on this forum regarding concern about k-1ii performance with regulars to star eating.

Most sadly of all it looks like the weather will be lousy this weekend meaning I won’t be able to test it. I AM excited that I have a work around to test it thought (as I said previously).

The iso invariance conclusion comes from:

It’s been referred to this way multiple times over the years iirc.

The issue isn't that the noise reduction isn't well done (although I would argue that ISO 640 seems like jumping the gun), but that it is mandatory. I can apply equally good noise reduction on my workstation at a later date to the sections of the image I want and to the degree that I want. I don't want my camera to take that choice away from me.

As it stands today I need to shoot at ISO 400 and pump the image to get the maximum amount of detail from the sensor, which seems nuts. I could see activating this NR at higher ISO's (like above 6400) to do some preliminary cleanup in camera? But maybe not even that realistically. I post process all my images, which are all shot in RAW and have no problem applying NR at that time.

So I just ran my own test at home after thinking and getting some advice from the guru's at DPR's tech forum. Basically the camera's RAW NR doesnt kick in until ISO 640, so below ISO 640 the K-1ii has the same performance as the K-1. Additionally, the K-1 was ISO invariant meaning I can push the exposure with no loss of detail a stop or two (at least).

So I took pictures at ISO 1600 correctly exposed and then took pictures at ISO 400 and pushed them two stops to get the comparison with/without the NR. I asked my family their opinions of which one was better (blind test) of a couple spots at 100%. Everyone liked the MK1 version better.

My path forward:
A) I'm going to get some real-life images this weekend using this technique and see if I care about the differences.
B) I have a request for details in to Ricoh and was promised a response by today/tomorrow. I've been a customer for over a decade and have four Pentax dSLRs sitting within 6 feet of me. This is their opportunity to impress me. I'm not looking for an instant fix. I just want honest details on if they can push firmware to turn off the NR and what their plan moving forward is.
C) After inputs from A/B I'm going to find out how expensive it is to return the camera to B&H (I'm inside their 30 day window) and make a decision.

All in all I'm excited to have a K-1 (of some flavor) to shoot with. I have really enjoyed shooting with my K-1ii so far, but I'm annoyed I need to even consider this entire circus.
