I've been subscribing to a local radio station for several years and started taking photos of their plays back in 2013 as practice for me. To stay out of everyone's way I need the long lens and the DA*300 worked a treat on the K5 and the 150-450 enabled me to maintain distance to avoid distracting those watching. This scene was from the end of the play and being in the right place worked a treat. 4MBS Shakespeare Festival 2016 'As You Like It' Finale by noompty, on Flickr

I don't have many photos of birds flying and probably none over 300mm but here's something flying that fits into this thread. K-1 and the 150-450 @ 450mm, the bright conditions meant the lens worked well for tracking and maintaining focus whilst panning despite my best attempts to get it wrong. Cheers mate,
The conditions were really good for a few days, I wished I lived closer to a surf coast to get out there more often.

Some pretty dangerous conditions along the coast here at the moment, with most surfers needing to be towed in by jet skis: The swell at Currumbin by noompty, on Flickr

A marvellous set of images there Gary, shows the lens is excellent all these years later and you've got the skill to make the most of it. :)

I'd love to pick up an LX or even a simpler film camera. The idea of B&W film appeals greatly and would really help my eye. You need to stop giving me ideas. :p
I can understand going for a gimbal with the long lenses, the more you use long lenses the more sense they make. I really don't have a need for one yet, though I've found my Manfrotto Junior Geared Head is allowing some vibration with the 150-450. Hence my interest in a Gimbal. Before then though I'd try this: 055 Magnesium Photo-Movie Head with Q5 Quick Release it's currently fitted to my monopod: Aluminum Fluid Monopod with 3/8'' top attachment, 4 sections so as I already have it I will see if it's more stable, though having said this would a gimbal provide better stability with a longer lens in windy conditions? This has been when I've found vibration to be an issue.

Yeah, that sounds like a lot to carry around. The bigger issue would be tracking subjects with it, something I've found an issue with the 150-450 after a couple of hours. For now I've got a good tele and can't really throw money at a new lens even if I could find one. The 1.4x however might give me that extra bit of reach for a lot less investment.

Sorry if you misinterpreted my previous post, the aircraft image was the 150-450 without a teleconverter. I've not tried the 2x converter on the 150-450 yet but might give it a go soon. Hopefully it will come out alright. I would have loved the opportunity to pick up the 250-600 but that's a pipedream now so will make do with what I have and maybe add the Pentax 1.4 converter as the shots people are getting indicate it performs well. Of course, the F or FA 600/4 would be brilliant so hopefully you'll be successful in tracking one down.
So you can sit in your living room and capture humming birds? Wow, that's laid back photography.
I like the blurred wings, the sense of motion is more obvious and the details around the head are plenty sharp. The larger image on Flickr is worth checking out for sure. Some lovely work mate. :)

Some awesome bird images in this thread. I can only admire the patience of those who regularly get out and chase them.
I had a day at an airshow on the weekend, really wished I had the reach of a 600 for images of aircraft in flight. I'll have to whip out the Kenko 2x converter to give that a go with the 150-450 but I've never really thought it was that good. I might have to save some pennies for the 1.4 converter to see what that's like. Brisbane Valley Airshow - Winjeel take-off by Grant, on Flickr

Edit: Actually I would like to have something like this if it's as good as the Sigma Sports: Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 lens to be announced for Photokina | Photo Rumors
Alas, the usual story for K mount prevails.

A brilliant set of images mate, sharp and detailed with a really rich exposure. ---------- Post added 08-08-16 at 08:00 AM ----------
I'm not really into birding but I appreciate images of difficult subjects well captured and the K-1 and 560 seem to be a great combination judging by what you can achieve with it.

Taken last month using the K-1 & DA*300.
The track had a great spot that allowed normal spectators to watch from the inside of turn 1 which was great as it allowed me to slow the shutter speed and pan with the bikes through a longer arc. The first image was 1/200s, the second at 1/125s. Classic MX 49 (1 of 1) by Grant, on Flickr Classic MX 47 (1 of 1) by Grant, on Flickr

There's more room around the little fella, he doesn't feel as squished into the bottom of the frame like the previous image. Is that how you see it?
