OK, Dave, that does it. I was waffling whether to do the Icefields Parkway this fall. Now I must do it after viewing your wonderful shots. Nothing like the Rockies to inspire photography.

As with Michaelina, my DA*300 is pretty well glued to my IIs.

Feeling Ian's buzz, I went out looking for butterflies today as well. Here are a couple. Both taken with the K-5 IIs and the DA*300.

The recent sunny, hot weather has brought out the butterflies. K-5 IIs, DA* 300, f/6.7, 1/500s, -1.5EV brought back +1.12EV in post, ISO200, TAv mode.

Thanks, Brian. The rendering of the IIs/DA*300 combo is superb.

Awesome photo, Adrian. I don't think any N. American butterfly possesses such an intricate pheromone organ.

Since Rupert has come to see squirrels as Spawn of the Devil, somebody needs to present the alternate view:

Indeed. So we know what that camera/lens combo can do.

Hi, Al. Two things determined the look of your photos:

1) Depth of field - The zone of focus is quite thin in your photos and is the main reason for the soft look of the images. A narrower aperture would have put more of the blossom in focus.

2) Exposure - ISO100,f4/,1/320s contributed to underexposure. I would have bumped the ISO higher since the latest K series cameras have minimal noise up to ISO1600. You will find this out for yourself when you get around to post-processing your images. This would have also allowed you to use a smaller aperture. One way to have overcome the flat lighting would have been to have used a touch of flash. Even the on-camera flash would have helped here.

Possibly a SODAR installation, although these would be very large antennae for that purpose. Google it and see if you can find any matching images.

Given that moire is an interference pattern, I would think that angle of view has a great deal to do with producing it. You can test this out for yourself easily if you have a laptop. Open up a blank page in a text editor and make the background a plain color such as white or gray. Now point your camera and lens at it from straight on. You should see a marked moire pattern (with any digital sensor camera, not just the IIs). Then walk one way or the other and replicate. You should see the moire weaken on one side of the image.

One of the redpolls at the feeder. Both the feather detail and the moss detail on the branch below are better than I could get with my K-5.

PF = Purple Fringing. Usually seen in high contrast areas of an image such as a backlit tree branch, etc. As I understand it, it is a consequence of light hitting the sensor sensels at a high angle.

Indeed, I have noticed that in certain situations the K5IIs renders a touch cooler than the K-5 but not all the time. The red channel seems to be much better behaved than before so this is a likely result. As for PF, as others have written, the unsullied sensor is now a harsh mistress and will readily show up any shortcomings of your lenses.

Since we don't hear from Rupert much anymore, I figured it was my duty to bring back some tree rat love. Yes, they are troublesome rodents. They are also so damned cute. In case the exif doesn't make it: K5IIs, DA*300, 1/350s handheld, f/6.7, ISO400
