@Weevil: The birdbath water supply is just an old hose with a bamboo dowel stuck in it strapped to a branch above the birdbath. With the proper flow in the hose, a small stream erupts from the joint of the dowel and the hose while the rest of the water trickles down the dowel to keep the bath full. All the birds in the yard use the bath for bathing except the hummingbirds which can fit under the small stream. Most birds drink from the clean top stream also rather than from the potentially dirty bath water. It has been a hot summer with many wildfires around so the birds are in the bath constantly.

Thanks for posting this incredible footage. But it would have been nice to see some horizontal saw cuts on the inside of the nestbox to aid the ducklings in getting a better grip during their escape.

Hi, Albert. That is a male Black-headed Grosbeak and should be well within its normal range in your neck of the woods. Great singers!

Jack

Nice shots, Rob. Yours was a female. In females, the red of the crest stops above the eye and there is no red in the mustache.

Thanks, Albert. There were about 6 males and 3 females preening on a fallen alder over the pond. It was almost dusk under heavy overcast so lighting was not great. Yes, Reifel is one of my refuges.

Eastern Kingbirds are found in BC everywhere east of the Coast Mountains, but not as common as farther east. They are one of the most common birds across the Prairies and in eastern Canada south of the tundra.

Albert - I did some googling on the California Thrasher. The best link I found is an excerpt from Grinell's work published in 1917 here:

http://artifex.org/~ecoreaders/lit/Grinnell1917.pdf

He gets to the usage of the bill a ways into the excerpt. Turns out the bird does use it like a pick-axe at times when feeding on the ground.
