prime, prime, everywhere a prime...

The 35mm f2.4 is hard to beat as a first prime (well ok, the 40mm xs is better imho). The 35mm is what you'd call a standard prime. The 50mm falls into the portrait category. Whilst you can shoot landscapes with either of them, when most people think about landscape primes, the 21mm or wider would be what they'd think.

As for low light performance, the 50mm will let in more light, so will allow you to use a faster shutter speed; however, with wider lenses like the 35, you can typically use a slower shutter speed. In the end, the low light performance isn't that different between the two.

The bokeh when stopped down on the 50mm is a touch smoother than the 35 (due to rounded aperture blades)

Some old manual lenses are really good, some are so-so. The A series or newer are usually easier to work with on digital than older k/m lenses (which need the green button to do stop down metering in M mode, or use them fully open in other modes)

Most of the old manual 50's are fairly decent (the f1.4 versions especially). At the telephoto end, the 135mm f2.8 (Pentax or takumar) are damn good. The 120, 100, 85 M's and K's are usually a bit more expensive, the a's being very expensive.

At the wide end, legacy 28mm's are plentiful, and fairly cheap. Any wider than that, and things get very expensive very quickly (and to be perfectly honest, you'd be better of buying a DA21)

Sorry for the ramble, in short, buy the DA35 (or DA40 XS if you can find one). Buy a legacy 50mm f1.4 M series, and get yourself some macro tubes. Add a 135mm f2.8 takumar, and one day in the future pick up a DA21 or DA15.

If however you can find the cash, and there's a good second hand deal on one, pick up the DA35mm f2.8 limited :)
