For documenting paintings, depending on the scale, the dfa 50mm macro is probably the best option.

Yes, but I could also say that about the DA21, and DA35 macro (although my preference would be for the 31!).

I own all of the DA/FA limiteds, and trust me, there's nothing else like them (especially the FA limiteds!). The 31 and 77 deserve the praise that's constantly heaped on them.
To the OP, buy one of the limiteds. It doesn't matter which one, they are all superb.
