The photo is of a fruit bat, taken in centennial park, Sydney. Every night at dusk a few thousand fly out of their trees looking for something to eat. I've been trying for some time to catch one in flight, they move fast, and the light levels are very poor. I ended up capturing that at f4.5, using TAV, a shutter speed of 1/500, and exposure of -2.0ev. The ISO ended up at 3200.
For AF, I used AFC, with all 33 points. I've tried every combo of AF going, but that's the only combination I've found to work. If it's on the centre spot (which is what I usually use for birds), if the spot drifts off the bat for a fraction of a second, the focus goes way off. With AFC, the K-1/300 combo does a pretty good job at tracking the bats. The 2 main problems I've found are choosing a bat (from amongst many hundreds) that will end up flying overhead, and hoping that the K-1 will lock onto it quickly enough (without the DA300 doing a full focus hunt, by which time it will have flown overhead).
One of the worst parts about it is the time window. At 7:25 the first bat will appear. By 7:30 the exodus will be in full swing. By 7:35 it will be too dark.

I'm lucky enough to walk home from work every night through that bat storm, so I've been able to have a few practice runs. Most shots are terrible though. I've literally just purchased the DA200 in the hope that the slightly larger aperture will help. My next aim is to catch a bat drinking from the lake (you can see them flying in for a drink in the second image). I suspect that may take a year to accomplish :)

I bleeping love the K-1. Go look at the full resolution of that shot. The detail on the face is perverse
\edit
I might have been a little drunk when taking this shot. I am however mightily impressed with the way the K-1 + FA limited behave. I bleepity love the K-1.

Thanks! Yes, I used AFS, set to the centre spot.

Yes, the DA300 on the k-1 is awesome. I don't really think about high/low ISO using that lens, if I want to capture a squirrel in the late evening, it doesn't bother me that I'm using ISO 6400. I just use it, and move onto the next shot. I'd prefer to capture everything at ISO100 obviously, but if you're used to the K-3, then ISO 1600 is the new 200. The only downside to the DA300 is that it doesn't have the same zoom factor. For blue tits and sparrows, it's disappointing. For everything else, it's awesome

Follow the Flickr link, and it says DFA 24-70 f2.8. I asked the same question previously in this thread, and felt a little silly afterwards! :D

Not quite right. The A20 has 5 blades, so it produces a 10 pointed star. However. The flare resistance of the A20 (and for that matter the K18) is rubbish compared to the DA15 (older coatings, older optical designs). You may be able to tease a good looking star burst out of those lenses, but probably only for night time light sources. You *may* be able to tease a star burst with a sunset, but I've yet to manage it with those lenses (shooting into the sun just produces nasty flares). Maybe if I was patient enough to use a tripod and bracketing, I could tease something out in post. I'm not that patient though. I suspect the best options right now are the 24-70 or 15-30 DFA zooms.

How are you finding the A20? It's the one lens I've not yet taken out on the K-1 (to be honest, I always found it's performance on the K-3 to be somewhat lacking).

I've heard that too, but I think I'm going to need to get some more practice in before I perfect the technique ;)

Yup. Ok. Don't care about high ISO right now, but have just nailed a low ISO pixel shift shot. It works. Make sure shake reduction is turned off....

I have been taking photos today, mainly using the K18, FA28, FA31, FA43, DFA100, and DA*300. They will be arriving once my pint has emptied itself :)

Go on, take a few snaps, then put it back on to charge. I won't tell anyone! :)
