The big issue for me when using this lens is getting focus right. I did adjust the white balance on the first picture (this old high school "stadium" has lighting issues). With a track around a Canadian Rules football field, my seat twenty rows up was a long way from the action. At maximum focal length, taking this shot with a full frame camera wouldn't have been possible. The second picture is "as shot" using the macro setting. It's not 1:1 (1:4?), but it was common for zoom lenses with this range from this era to have a "macro" focusing range that was only available at the minimum focal length.
