That's what I used to think, but under bright sunlight I'm finding I need to get this one down to f9.5 in order to get anything I find acceptable. (It might not be so much softness as CA.)

Spending the month using the Super-Takumar 35/3.5. So far, not entirely happy with it (bit soft and CA-y in daylight, it seems). But, a shot with a close-up filter attached:

S-M-C Takumar/6x7 90mm f2.8. (The leaf shutter 90mm for the 6x7.)

And S-M-C Tak/6x7 105mm f2.4. This particular lens needs some UV treatment, as it's making everything very yellow.

Oh wow. Beautiful results.

I spotted one at a flea market earlier today, but didn't have the cash on me. Now I'm definitely kicking myself. :)

It's a Takumar/6x7, but it's still a Takumar:

So far it seems to focus fine at least, and it's not loose. It just feels like I could unscrew part of the barrel if I really wanted to. (Obviously I didn't actually try.)

Just got my hands on a Super-Takumar 135/2.5. (The version 2 Super-Multi-Coated one would have been preferred, but I'm not complaining.)

Something I noticed though, and I'm curious if this is normal, is that the entire front section of the barrel -- basically, everything beyond the focusing ring -- seems, well, not loose, but not fixed. I gave the lens a turn when mounted and wound up turning the front of the barrel rather than unmounting the lens.

I don't much care for them when I'm shooting film, since I find they get a bit in the way of how I shoot. But when paired with a digital body that wouldn't be able to use an auto-diaphragm anyway then I'd much rather be using them.

Which camera are you using? A lot of people find live view's focus peaking option to be more useful than the stock focusing screen when it comes to focusing old manual lenses. (I personally find that I miss just as often as with the viewfinder, but that may just be due to the shooting conditions and subjects.)

If it's the same model of Zeiss as I'm thinking of, the Takumar is also easier to stop down. (I love my Zeiss 135, but I hate that little lever. :hmm: )

Also with the Super-Tak 55/2. After having spent all last month using a lens whose bokeh was nowhere near as smooth, this one was wonderful to dig out and use yesterday:

Super-Tak 55/1.8. (Edit: My mistake. This was the Super-Tak 55/2, not the f1.8.)

I think I need to check my monitor's colours. Blues are significantly richer on it than when I look at the same photos on my phone, so one of them is clearly off.

While I've never tried myself, the extension tube should give you enough clearance.

What happens is that there are 4 slightly recessed screws on the Zenit mount. The body-detection pin that locks the M/A switch on S-M-C (and SMC) Taks gets trapped in these and locks the lens in place.

Super-Takumar 35/3.5 shot that I took about 2 weeks ago:

Giving by g026r, on Flickr

I find that I sometimes have trouble with this lens, as the colours can easily head into overdone. Both vibrance and saturation have been decreased in this shot, and the reds are still verging on too much.

My chrome-and-black Takumar 135/3.5 finally arrived, and is it a beaut. If it wasn't for the ID the previous owner scratched into the underside of the barrel you'd think it was brand new. Didn't really get anything too amazing from my walk around with it yesterday, partially as I'm still figuring out how much exposure compensation to dial in. (Seems to need some when not in bright sunlight.)

A question on hoods for this thing: I know they use a 46mm filter thread, rather than the usual 49mm. Most vintage hoods I've seen for 46mm Takumars look like they're for lenses with shorter focal lengths. Was there a hood specifically for the 135 made, or did they just make one set of hoods for the 46mm filter threads?

And a picture from it:

S-M-C 55/1.8. I've actually had this lens for over a month, but yesterday was the first day that I actually put it on the camera and used it.

(At the moment though, I'm sitting excitedly waiting for my recently bought chrome-and-black 135/3.5 to show up.)
