Indeed they were, resulting in incredibly restricted speeds as there were greater limitations on how fast and slow they could swing the assembly upwards. 1/25 to 150 on the original Exa, and 1/30 to 1/175 on the I-series. (The very first models claimed the top speed was 1/250, but it appears that was either a misprint or the actual speed was a bit too off even by the standards of East German budget cameras, as it was subsequently relabeled to 1/150.) The II-series and 500-series used a regular focal plane shutter.
Also makes a rather distinctive noise when it fires. More of a "clunk" than a more usual shutter sound. I for Ivy: Ivy by g026r, on Flickr
