I think you had mentioned this before too. It is very true. You hit the nail on the head.

A recent request for video from a client who has always been a still client was the eye opener for me. We have to be prepared to deliver both services if we want to stay in business and competitive going forward.

I know how that goes... been there a few times myself.

Anyway, if you end up needing multi-cam production gear, or complete crew the TVPG guys are really good at it. I do occasional camera work for them and do their stills for collateral and web (with my K1 of course). Actually I was in LA last week shooting various segments of an interactive training program (to be presented through an LMS) for Panasonic broadcast system's newest 4K camera. We use the Panasonic 4K camera to shoot the footage. The thing is a beast, HDR and endless color correction on the fly. We used a six-camera 4K Flypak (used three cams) to record the footage. We went through nine 1TB SSD cards for just a few hours of recording time! The finished piece is going to be featured on Panasonic's website and I am sure at the NAB.

Off subject, check this out Blackmagic Design: Blackmagic Web Presenter it seems to be a cool items. I may use one for my own personal streaming projects. Two cam switching on the cheap. It may be too light duty for your apps but worth a look for a compact set up for streaming to the web.

Take care.

Hi Lauren,

That is a fancy set up. The new audio gear looks good. I do not see a video switcher. I am assuming you are recording the two video sources separately to be combined later? I still can't believe the K1 footage looked more punchy than the FS7 in the interview clip you posted earlier!!

As a result of your feedback, I have modified my video gear acquisition plans. I will use the K1 for static shots and augment it with a Sony a6500 for gimbal shots and situations needing fast autofocus. The dual 4K issue will remain in the background for now.

FYI, back in late 2000's I was the marketing guy for this company and all we did was integration work for high-end video, mostly multi-cam studio set ups, mobil trucks/FLYPAKs and some ENG. TV Pro Gear | Broadcast Video System Integration, Rentals, & Sales. They are still very much in business and will be exhibiting at this year's NAB in the outdoor mobil truck exhibit area. I'll be there. If you end up bing in Vegas for NAB, stop by we can chat some more. Let me know if you need tickets to get in.

Hi Lauren and PiDicus,

I am already learning a lot from the two of you. I am familiar with a lot of the concepts but have not done any audio editing in ages. The tools are such that we there is access to very high end results for newbies like me. The kicker is that the stuff does not cost a bloody fortune like in the old reel-to-reel days. If you do not mind, I will send you two a PM with my more extended follow up.

You do have quite a few mics. I have used a variety in the past but now own a very low end wired lav. I thought mikes had to have XLR output to be considered "professional." I am seeing too many that have mini jacks and a lot of people rave about them. I am new to video editing. I started with Lightworks but quickly gave up on it and went to Premiere. One of the things I have to figure out is synching multiple sources of audio. I want to record on my Zoom because it has better audio. At the same time in camera recoding is already synched. So I have lots to learn. I got into it almost by default. I shot the footage for a client and then I had to figure out a way to make the stuff look professional. I used to do mutli-projector slide shows in the old days. A lot of the principles are the same. I went back to basics. The difference is that the tools available for production today are much more powerful compared to the stuff I used back in the 80's and 90's.

Thank you for ll your help.

Wow. I thought the side shots were the FS7 as they appeared sharper and had better color saturation. It was also interesting how they rendered the out of focus stuff in the background. I was looking for clues there to make a better guess as to which was which but could not tell no matter how much I looked.

I guess, I am going to stop doubting K1's video capability and go out there and shoot the next project with it. You made a believer out of me. Thanks.

BTW, the audio sounded really good. I noticed you used a Zoom recorder (on the timeline). I have the H4N and need to get a better mike than the chepo one I have. What do you use for lav and shotgun? Are they XLR or minis. Thanks again.

Wow. I really could not tell. I have a guess but I am no sure. Credit to you. Great job of color matching the footage from two very different sources. Pro job all the way.

Here is my guess. The straight ahead shots are the K1. The shots from the side are the Sony. Am I right? or did I get it all wrong.

I saw the Oracle demo reel. It looks great. Your reel is a lot of work both shooting and editing. I have just started with video. I guess I have to experiment too. I like the whole process of video making. It is a lot of work but if done right, it is magical.

You have quite a collection. I know FS7 is pretty high end. How does the footage from the other cameras mix with it? I shot the a6000 with a small lens on a gimbal. I really liked the light package. So I am thinking about getting a a6500 to let me shoot 4K if needed. You must have compared and contrasted the FS7 and the a6500. Is the difference really dramatic or close enough such that someone like me who does not need or can afford an FS7 can get by using the a6500?

Thanks,
Boris

I totally agree with you. As it was the case with most camera demo areas. However, the area that was showing the Sony 6500 was fairly dim in lighting which is unusual. On top of that , I was shooting with zooms that started at f4. So I would say this was far from ideal for lighting. You can almost sense that Sony dimmed the place on purpose to demonstrate its autofocus prowess. And boy did they deliver. I have never experienced autofocus performance like I did with the 6500. I tried the Sony 18-105 f4 first. It missed a few frames on the long end. Then I tried the Zeiss 16-70 f4. I tried everything to throw the focus off. I could not do it. I blasted a whole bunch of 11FPS shots then some video. The model's face where the focus point was, was in perfect focus in every single frame! Wow. If Pentax had a camera with similar capability (including 4K video), I would buy a pair for video work, in a heartbeat.

Yeh, I almost had a heart attack from all the excitement!!

I did not get a good feeling. The Japanese execs were their usual selves, self congratulating themselves for the "breakthrough" tech they are introducing to the world. And the US based employees, looked like they were afraid of smiling. I thought Jim Malcolm's arrival a few years ago changed the culture for the better. But it felt like it was back to business as usual. To be fair, Canon was not doing any better. In the past, their camera counters had two sometimes three deep the people who wanted to get close to check out a product. This year, at least for a the few hours that I was there, it looked like a ghost town. There were 8-10 employees behind one counter, ready to show you their hardware and there was hardly anyone walking up to them. Sign of things to come? Who knows.

If these are clues to what is to come for Ricoh/Pentax, we better buckle up and get ready. It is going to be a rough ride. I hope I am wrong.

I totally agree with you. It almost seems like, they are doing their best to kill the brand. If the diehard Pentaxians walk away, then they are doomed. You know how hard it is to acquire a new user. Hanging on to the current base would be priority #1. These guys are TOTALLY sleep behind the wheel.

I went by the Sony booth at CES to check out a few lenses for a friend who could not make it to the show. I got to try the A6500 with a 16-70 f4 Sony/Zeiss lens. I tried to miss focus on the camera but no matter what I tried, I failed. I blasted a series of 11FPS shots and everyone of them was in perfect focus. Don't get me started, we don't even have a decent focus on the Pentax bodies. I have struggled with my K5IIs, K3 and now K1. Video is not the only issue. Believe me.

The FA 77 was the lens of choice for all the tight shots and shot at f2.8, it is spectacular.

If I get more calls for video especially 4K then that is exactly what I intend to do. $2K for a used A6300 and a new A6500 and add to it a Sony 10-18 f4 for the wide autofocus shots. Pentax lenses take care of all the long and tight shots. You get to have the best of both worlds for less than the cost of a Sony A7 video camera body. Yes it is not RAW video but it is a lot better than some dedicated HD video cameras of only a few years ago costing a lot more.

I am not a video pro per-se but the footage I got from the A6000 is plenty good for my client's project. They even gave me the look (you know how small the A6000 is) when I was shooting the footage at their facility. Frankly, since it was the first time I was using the set up, I did not believe it myself either, until I saw the footage on my computer the next day. It is good enough for my applications. If the A6000 can look that good, I can't imagine how much better the 6300 or the 6500 will look.

You are absolutely right about dedicated gear for the task at hand. Now you are talking about real high end video cameras. RED is in a totally different league. We are talking about $15-20K or more just for the body. I think the game will get more interesting as time goes by.

I had a call for video work. I used two Sony A6000 cameras. One with an autofocus lens on a gimbal and the other one with Pentax lenses on a tripod for close ups. It worked out pretty good and it was a cheap solution with nice 1080 footage.

Somehow I cannot bring myself to part with my K1 and all the great Pentax glass. Believe me, I want to go to ONE system that would do both video and stills. It seems like the dedicated/hybrid route may be the way to go. Dedicated K1 for stills and some other system for video that allows the use of Pentax glass, most likely any of the mirrorless offerings. Is Pentax going to challenge a GH5? Probably not anytime soon if ever. Panasonic, Sony and the other video guys have too much of a head start. Their products are mature, well into their development cycle. I guess Pentax guys in Japan know that but at the same time they cannot ignore the direction of the market. Who knows what is going to come from Pentax next. More great still gear, yes. Any decent video, not likely. But as the adage goes, never say never.

These Pentax Japanese executives may be traditionalist but they cannot ignore the strong signals from the users and the market.

I doubt they want to go out of business. So perhaps they are cooking up some surprises. The same way they did with 645D, 645Z and the K1. They all took the industry by surprise and brought a seemingly "dead" company back to life and even perhaps prominence.

My expectation is to see pro-spec video in Pentax cameras very soon and an FF 645Z. That would shake things up a bit. Wouldn't you agree?

Yes. Panasonic and Olympus. They are quite good but no match for K1 when it comes to stills. I know it is like comparing apples to oranges and not fair. However, it is comparing the best each brand or format has to offer.

---------- Post added 12-25-16 at 07:59 AM ----------

Exactly. A K1 replacement with a high quality 1080P will be a good start. A 4K capable FF will be the ultimate. If the 4K capable FF Pentax comes to fruition, it will go head-to-head with Sony A7RII and A99II (not to mention Canikon offerings), something Sony may not want. At the same time, Sony's market share is so much bigger than Pentax that Sony may not care.

I have a client who asks me to do stills of their facilities. For that my K1 and the lenses I have are beyond excellent. However, recently they asked for video of the place. I knew it was going to be a two camera shoot. I could have used my K1 and another camera but did not want to deal with the possible color mismatch. So this is what I did, I borrowed my brother's Sony A6000 with the 16-50 kit lens. I used that camera on a gimbal for the walk through images. I borrowed another friends A6000 and used my Pentax FA limited lenses (mostly the FA77) for all the tripod and static shots. I shot in 1080P and the results are plenty professional. I asked my client if they wanted 4K and they said no. So this was an easy (almost no cost) shoot. If the video calls come more often and include requests for 4K, then I have to think about my gear a lot more.

IMHO, Sony is the only camera that can deliver high-end stills and high-end video. Yes Panasonic is good with 4K but I am wary of m43 still quality. I have put my Pentax purchase on hold for now. As I mentioned earlier, K1, for its price and capability has no match when it comes to stills. Unfortunately, the addition of video complicates the situation. One possible strategy might be to keep the K1 for stills. Get a Sony A6300 and use it with Pentax glass for static shots and get a Sony A6500 with an AF Sony wide zoom and use it for all the action shots on a gimbal. The video set up will cost around $2.5K and give me best of both worlds. The other option is to go all Sony for both FF stills and 4K video. An all Sony solution will be a lot more expensive than a hybrid Pentax/Sony APSc solution.

Don't know. I am in the same boat as any other Pentaxian who might have to deal with calls for pro quality video. For now I am in no hurry. I will see if more video comes my way.
