Finally, got a chance to start with indoor competitive. Lighting was not very good, it was a smaller gym with florescent lighting (which I don't see very often).

For these, I did use a expodisc to help with wb, I think it did a tremendous job (any casts here were probably due to a quick "autofix" in "so-so" software without spending a lot of time at the moment on adjustments - I'll do more later). I did have some issues with focus, I'm wondering what tips folks might have? I do wear glasses, but due to the high action sequences, I essentially just turn the back screen off, set TAV mode (I was shooting for 1 fstop over 2.8 to get a little more DOF as well as making the lens a little sharper, apx 1/500th). I think I just took the defaults with all focus points active, would I achieve some better results if I changed some of those? I generally only get about 2 mins per routine, so I have to have everything set up before they begin.

Any further comments?

Thanks Miguel, I did find this feature last night while walking through the menus again.

(and maybe this should warrant another forum thread?)

When shooting in high speed drive mode, is there a way to turn off the LCD on the back of the camera? Mostly to have less light interfering with the view finder.

(its a customer function I'm not finding, or a combination of settings under the 1st menu in the "set up" menu?)

Thanks M. I do have a Tameron f2.8 70-200. And I'm very excited to have it. Compared to what I lived with last year, I am actually looking forward to being "known as" the team photographer. It sort of just grabs you and and sucks you in. Like a Mt. Biker, or a skier, you just want to improve, and as you do and learn the limitations of your equipment, you constantly push the boundaries and get on the upgrade cycle. Don't we all do that?

I guess I'll wait for a little while to see if I'll upgrade the 18-135 lens that came with the camera for next year's outdoor, but WR is important, but it's all a new purchase at this point, so the budget has to have a line in the sand for at least the first year!

Nice shots Miguel.

So reminds me of the shots I didn't get with my son, who played soccer for years at a fairly high regional level.

The thing that I'll be able to do is actually get off some shots of indoor competitive cheer at my daughter's high school. For that, the action is quick (think gymnastics like tumbling and stunting). But that's a different kind of action shot with motion more vertical then the constant away and towards motions of soccer.

I'll be back in December with some of those. Maybe I'll show some of the better pictures I took last season, and compare them to what I can get with the new camera. I'll be watching this space to see what other peoples experiences are in setting up optimal metering modes and focus modes will be. Although I am thinking I won't have to go much higher than 6400 iso for indoor/gym lighting. Not only is there no comparison with the lens just due to size, I won't be waiting for the camera to zoom in and out either with a little button surrounding the shutter release!

So, kind of begs the question. Would most people rather go with a smaller lens, and crop at the output processing stages, or a more expensive zoom to crop in when exposing?
