Excellent shot - a very tricky bird to photograph as they pop in and out of the undergrowth and the light is generally poor.

And if they can manage to avoid the gamekeepers shotgun and the rat poison then they just need to avoid the 10,000 wind turbines springing out of the ground over their range!

Very nice set of photos Noel - I particularly like the one of the Yellow-plumed Honeyeater.
I've been out this morning, also with the K3iii and 150-450 and my shots are nowhere near as good as yours. For the past couple of years I have been using the 150-450 on my K1ii and I now realise that need to up my minimum shutter speed substantially from 1/400 to account for the extra length with APSC camera. Thanks for your photos to show what is possible with combo.

And while the corellas are ripping up the grass in my local park (see above), their cousins the Yellow-tailed black cockatoes have decided to tear into the trees! K1ii with DFA 150-450, 1/400s, f6.3, iso 1600.

A few Long-billed Corellas have been quietly scarifying my local park over the past week. K1ii & DFA 150-450.

A pair of Tawny Frogmouths (Podargus Strigoides) nested in park near to my home and I have been waiting for the chick(s) to hatch and pose for me. However, the one chick that resulted has been very shy, spending most of its time over the past 3-4 weeks under mother's wing. It only ventured out during the last few days prior to fledging, but I managed a few shots, notwithstanding the interfering sticks and branches. Frogmouths are a type of nightjar or nighthawk, hunting for insects at night and roosting throughout the day.
K1ii & DFA 150-450, except the night shots with the DA* 300mm

Nice Osprey shots. I was watching a David Attenborough video recently and he noted that Osprey's align the fish head first when flying with them to reduce the drag so they can fly more easily - as nicely shown in your photos. ---------- Post added 24-07-20 at 04:43 PM ----------
I agree - it is an immature Brown Goshawk (one of my favourite birds).

Noel, beautiful photos (I like the red capped robin a lot and wonder how you are going to get a better one?).
For the windmill shot, does your crop allow you to zoom out a bit? My view of the photo is that the sense of the photo is the grandeur of mountains ( and their colour) rather than the windmill, so to zoom out to the top of the mountains may be better???? Just my opinion but you have a magnificent scene opportunity. I am sure that in reality it is gobsmackingly breathtaking. Enjoy your trip. Geoff

Terry nice shot of the honeyeater. I'm wondering if you have reason to use the 300 & 1.4 TC instead of your 150-450??? Thx Geoff

Lukulele, here in Australia we have a very similar (close relative?) bird - the Black Shouldered kite (Elanus Axillaris) which is found all over mainland Australia, including the tropical north, and with close relatives in Papua New Guinea and probably further north into SE Asia. Believed to have spread across Australia with the introduction of the European house mouse. Very nice bird and a good hunter - able to hover above a target before diving. The one below was photographed in SE Australia (north of Melbourne) earlier this year (K3 with DA* 300mm & 1.4x TC, 1/2000, F8.0, iso 400)

This Black Shouldered Kite was hunting from a perch beside a rural highway in central Victoria. I stopped the car and was able to slowly approach him to about 20m before he flew off to another perch nearby. The winter morning sun catching the bright orange eye of this beautiful bird. K3 with DA*300mm and Pentax 1.4x TC (handheld). Both shots at 1/2000, F8 and ISO400

Very nice detail Rockstar. I have the same gear and do a bit of bird photography when I get the opportunity. I have just started playing with using the flash (AF540 FGZ) to see what that can do for my shots. Did you use a flash for these shots? If so, what type, and what settings (camera and flash) did you use (and distance from the subject?). Thanks, Geoff

Another "Butcher bird" on a grey day. Same name, same beak hook but from the other side of the world.
Its interesting how different birds have evolved the same tools to survive.
K3, 300/4, F5.6, 1/800, iso 400 but shot underexposed and a bit grainy with PP cropping and added exposure.
