I think there is room for perhaps a few sizes in the Pentax lineup. KP size, k-3 size, and K-1 size. Those should also be able to slot into three different price slots as well.

Sure but I don't walk around with my LCD screen open. If I just want to quick check my settings I just glance at the top LCD, that's what it's there for. It's like physical buttons. You could hide them in menus but having them accessible makes a difference in ease of use.

The little LCD on the K-1 is just barely adequate. In some ways it's almost useless but on the other hand I still do use it, even in its crippled form. I miss the big LCD on my K-5IIs. I wonder if the 3rd wheel could be made smaller to fit a larger LCD. Making the third wheel and the function wheel a little smaller would definitely allow a slightly larger LCD.

That fortunately does make a huge difference, especially when talking about the current FA lineup. I'm not sure how much larger the PLM version of the 55-300 is than the HD WR version, but to me it's a pretty small compact travel lens. Maybe it will matter less if/when the F/4 zooms hit the market but for now the difference between DA and FA system size is significant.

I definitely wouldn't mind faster SD spec but I don't see the need for Pentax to abandon SD cards. I think the faster spec SD do support 4k video just fine. They are smaller and cheaper. And I prefer having slots that in a pinch I can fill with recording media found at just about any big box store while on a trip. Besides SD very few formats are available at most stores in a pinch.

I am wondering, however, if accessing the faster cards UHS-3 is hardware dependent or is it a software issue? I assume with UHS-3 it's a hardware issue?

The battery on the KP is the other reason I chose the K-1 over the KP. Pairing my K-5IIs with the K-1 using the DLI90 made a lot more sense to me than mixing and matching batteries.

Yeah, I understand the lack of any sort of road map or guidance from Pentax being frustrating. It is for me too. But even where there are road maps there is discontent.

It does, however, seem Nikon is (initially) going smaller and lighter with its mirrorless lenses.

Just so everyone knows... Even Nikon fans aren't entirely happy with the new Z series lens road map. Make sure you read the comments below the article.

This is true. A K-mount camera can definitely be made lighter and smaller, perhaps by losing the mirror/AF system. This we know because the MX, Program Plus, P30T and so on were tiny compared to most of the Pentax DSLRs. So Pentax can definitely make a smaller camera if they want to.

Now the question is, do i/we want that camera? If it's done right and the technology is there to make the transition seemless, than I would love a Program plus sized camera. However, it it's not there than I am not ready to take a step backwards.

Fair enough. But Canon catalog is pretty damn deep both currently and used. Pentax is a lot less deep. Even buying from Japan or scrounging on the forums, some stuff just doesn't appear very often.

I think comparing people shooting Pentax to Nikon and Canon is a bad way to look at things. If everyone was your typical Nikon and Canon shooter there would only be two brands and Pentax would be gone. This discussion has gone on for a while, dating back to at least the K10D, but no doubt longer than that.

There are plenty of folks on this forum who either have no interest in the K-1 or who actually had a K-1 and sold it and got a KP or who sold it and went mirrorless. There are also a lot of folks who just like their DA lenses and are choosing to use two systems. Putting a DA 21 on a K-1 doesn't quite do it for me. But I do like my FA 24 f/2 on the K-1 more than I do on the K-5IIs.

I firmly believe if Pentax releases a K-3 level APS-C body sometime in the near future when it actually matters (not so long after that no one cares, seeing as folks have been screaming for an upgrade for at least a year) I believe it will sell.

Pentax was never going head to head with Nikon and Canon so if there are unsold 7D or D7000s or whatever it doesn't mean that there would he thousands of unsold K-3IIIs.

Personally, if the KP had a bigger buffer I'd probably have bought it over a K-1. But since it wasn't exactly what I wanted, I decided to take my FA lenses for a spin at their native focal length and DOF for only slightly more than a KP could be purchased for. In some ways Pentax gave a lot of us what we wanted, a camera to use our legacy lenses on. Other than the Irix 15mm I've invested nothing in new glass for the K-1. I'm just enjoying using my old full frame glass in its native format again.

Have you ever looked at the Canon EF catalog? It is quite impressive.

The consensus among Canon photographers is that aside from a few lenses needing a refresh, the EF catalog is perfectly adequate and there are enough used EF lenses in existence to sustain a generation of photographers.

And there is nothing wrong with having multiple systems. Pentax has a fully developed APS-C system so it's really just a matter of pushing a new body or two out every 24 months. It could use some fast primes if you want to get picky, but the flip side is it has the pancake limiteds which are small and fit in nicely with the more compact nature of the DA system. So in reality, it's missing nothing as Pentax chose to go a certain route with the system.

Basically what I'm saying is they don't need to cut the DA system to let the FA system flourish because the DA system is a mature system. Once that 11-18 comes out, they'll have WR lenses from 11-560mm. And pro level glass in that range as well. Obviously some of those lenses probably could use a refresh, but few of them are dogs.

Ricoh unfortunately doesn't want to make the investment Panasonic and Fuji made. That's what it comes down to. Fuji started out with nothing and built a really good system in a few years. Now they have two really good systems. You have to spend money to make money. I think Ricoh is happy to be a niche camera company that breaks even on its investment, whereas, Fuji is looking to be a market leader.

I do remember nikon was a bit more serious about APS-C. Fair point, my mistake. But they always had a deep "FX" (as they call it) legacy lens lineup and upgrade path to full frame for quite some time. Pentax was more like Fuji with sincere dedication to the APS-C format for almost 15 years. And even after the K-1, they released the KP. I still think with the lack of DFA/FA lenses in production and the fact that there are still a lot of APS-C Pentax photographers (including those, like me, who may also have a K-1 but prefer the size of a APS-C system at times)it would be a huge mistake to abandon that APS-C market outright. If they could put the KP internals into a K-3III with a bigger buffer and a DLI90 battery, I'm sure a considerable faction of Pentax APS-C photographers would be happy with the results.

Same exact conclusion I came to in April 2016. The Fuji system looks good until you do the math and realize the cost of switching. Once I turned the page on that and doubled down on Pentax I haven't looked back on my decision. I realized my FA lineup was actually pretty robust, so I ended up buying a K-1, but I'm still very much committed to APS-C as a system.

Then cancel the 11-18. Don't release a DA* lens without a suitable camera to mount it on. I think releasing the 11-18 says, here's a professional wide angle, we are committed to the DA ecosystem. Not releasing a professional body to go with it says, something entirely different.

The size, weight and price difference of the K-1 and lenses vs a KP (or K-3II) and lenses is a significant gap.

People that think pentax APS-C shooters should just toss the towel in and accept full frame is the future are delusional. Until Pentax has a full line of FA f/4 lenses to go head to head with the DA f/2.8s and until it's FA catalog is as complete as its DA catalog, I think maintaining two systems makes a lot of sense. And I think a lot of people will continue to shoot the APS-C system which we can see from the KP is not all that inferior to the FF K-1.

Canon and Nikon never really considered their crop sensor systems seriously. They always had a full frame upgrade path. Pentax, on the other hand, built a very robust APS-C system over a decade.
