The conversion was done in like a week. The k5 sensor is better suited for astro imho. I use 2" filters in a filter wheel directly infront of the camera. The off axis guider is in front of the filterwheel.

I had the camera modified by Kolari Vision, they removed the hot mirror and put in just clear glass. Then i can just use narrowband filters like using any astro camera. For halpha i extract the red channel and process that, oiii i process the green channel. Then for things like galaxies i have a baader skyglow filter which kind of acts like the cameras old hot mirror.

Managed to get out last night and nabbed M101 the Pinwheel Galaxy. Really my first decent galaxy image, just moved and i think the sky is a bit dark here.

Got 4.5 hours on this subject but not nearly enough! Here is my bi-color WIP of IC1805 in H-alpha and OIII
8x15min ISO400 h-alpha
11x15min ISO 400 OIII
Pentax k5 full spectrum mod with screw on TEC cooler.
Orion Achro Refractor with Omega Optical H-alpha filter and Celestron OIII filter

Hope you like it even with it being a bit noisey for my taste!

Got Oiii data added now. NGC7000 in bicolor.

I wish I had the money for 3.5nm filters and dedicated qhy ccd. I don't think my achro set up, cheap filters, and Pentax K5 are doing too bad!

My Pentax k5 has a full spectrum mod (essentially just the hotmirror removed) done by Kolari Vision. I use an Omega Optical 7nm H-alpha filter. Since only the red channel picks up h-alpha I just extract and process the red channel as a monochromatic image. DSS for stacking, then FITS Liberator to do initial stretch and red channel extraction.

Hope that helps!

Correct. I took four 400 second exposures and stacked them using median rejection in deep sky stacker.

Quick M64 the Blackeye Galaxy from Friday night. Sky only clear up for 30 mins and I got off four 400" exposures at ISO400.

Celestron C8 @f6.3. NEQ6 mount. Baader Neo Moon & Sky Filter. Full Spectrum mod Pentax K5.

Dont think it is all too terrible for so few exposures.

Thanks!

For this shot I took thirty 200" exposures at iso800. For dso's you want the longest exposure you can achieve until you hit the sky fog limit. So when the leftmost part of your histogram is squarely off the left edge. all things being equal lower iso's with longer exposure lengths are better. I really shouldve been at iso400 with 400" exposures (live and learn). Also longer exposures require more demanding mount and good guiding.

Planets are a different beast. Really i wouldnt recommend a dslr for planets. You want small pixels and quick frame rate to beat seeing. For planetary i use a zwo asi120mm but have seen some decent results with dslr in movie capture mode.

Hope this helps!

You use the Ha image for luminance and combine it with the RGB data for color. So the HaRGB image has all data from ha and rgb

Work In Progress. Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33 in IC 434). Only got 7 x 1200" exposures before having difficulties. I plan on capturing much more data.

Celestron C8, 7nm H-alpha filter, modified Pentax k5 ISO800 all mounted and guided on NEQ6 mount.

Hi FS999,

saw your post asking about star maps.

the best star map is astrometry.net

You load up your image and it plate solves for you.

Astrometry.net <- upload link

hope you don't mind I took the liberty of doing your two images

Astrometry.net <- your widefield

Astrometry.net <- you closeup

Unless you are talking about in the field. Than I use SkEye app on my phone or Stellarium planetarium software (its free)

Tracking a 10" DOB for imaging is going to be very demanding. What did you have in mind if I may ask?

Melotte 15 in H-alpha. Heart of the heart nebula.

22 x 900" ISO800 Cooled and full spectrum modified Pentax K5. Celestron c8 OTA @ f6.3 on NEQ6 mount. I plan on doing full HST on this one if I get enough clear nights.
