Are we really THAT rare?

I am thinking current dollars... Of course if you did start 20 or 30 year ago the price would be different. But the think is, if you work all day as a pro, you'd expect 50, 100K or more raw income a year, especially if you put in 12-18 hours a day, 6 day a week.

Please remember that even photographers also may need a car for transportation as well as a place to work or receive clients. This alone can cost more than photographic gear...

Even so as today, you can likely be done with more like 2K/year for photographic gear.

Yet the typical plumber or taxi driver has more expenses than a photographer. Even if you get 50K$ on photographic gear every 5 years, this is not much by any means. 10K$/year before taxes... And I am quite confident that as a pro you don't have to pay VAT and other various taxes on your gear...

To produce a movie, I think the budget is more in millions ;).

Many activities require lot of money, and taking photo is one of the activities that require the least.

Yep absolutely no issue ;) Just that of course we complain ourselve that many other photographers can't understand us "why are you shooting Pentax ?" while the gear is so terrible... Apparantly some even get some remarks (I never got one honestly) and they don't like it. Personnally the last thing I want to bother a friend or person I meet in real life is to ask for their camera brand. And on photo sharing website, the last thing people are interrested in are actually gear.

So we complain of some offencive people that maybe have to justify their own choice of something... But we also criticise the others. Like the people that take photo with hood reverted, like all the terrible shots Canikon shooters get or how terrible it is to use a tablet for shooting pictures ;). There likely a good reason the tablet was used. maybe it is only to show the tablet to everybody and feel better. Maybe it is because that their only camera anyway or because a friend already borrowed the main camera ;) We don't know ;)

While I surely agree on the last point that it look strange, well everyone is free and the worse might be, they may manage a better photo than myself with my K3 ;) This happen !

I wonder why we have to criticize other "monorities" in the photographic world while we are ourselve a quite small minority. ;) ;) ;)

I can certainly understand the appeal of a big screen compared to shooting with a phone or any camera without a viewfinder, in particular if you don't have that great eyesight. A typical modern tablet beat any EVF in term of level of details displayed. Again if you have no so great eyesight, the OVF might be not that practical or even a pain to use, anyway. It also allow a much better experience when reviewing the shots and showing them to others. It is the most effective devicet for post processing short of a full fledged computer. Like smartphone it has instant connectivity but unlike them it has great autonomy.

Many pros, use the device as a control monitor or distant shutter trigger or to show photos to clients. This is a key feature feature in advertisement of 645Z as an example.

A completely different consideration, for some reason this might be the only camera you have with you at that time even if it was un-intended. Or maybe your phone does a bad job at it and you don't want to spend more money to get something else...

No oftence intended here, but then I think why not use them as photographic tools? :) :) :) I am sure one can get some outstanding shots with a tablet!

Well I didn't say it had to be expensive or to be Pentax. The idea is that a K3 (for example) but also a D7100 would be a nice choice. That would cost no more than a K70 or other entry level camera that you spend more than needed for marketing reasons.

You would even find a 5D FF body for not that much theses days. In 5 minutes I found out one for 360$ on ebay.

As for lenses, a kit lens and a fast 50 should do the trick. In a sense if you get the 5D, it be easier to find a cheap AF WA (say 28/35mm) and a cheap 70-300 for $100 would still give you quite lot of possibilities for bokeh. 3.5-5.6 is not slow on FF... it is a 2.2-3.5 on APSC after all...

But I agree you'd need to know your stuff to give that to your son.

there less and less need to get the latest version. But market segmentation mean that a "pro" or "flagship" camera is much more likely to be usable, even if a bit old than the latest greatest entry level camera.

This apply on many level. K30/K50 clearly don't have the same life expectency as K5/K3. While the latest entry level camera typically get many megapixels or even great high iso, they tend to lag in term of AF... There no use to have more MP if the picture is out of focus. Even K70 doesn't match 3 year old K3 for AF. And all entry level Canikon have basic AF systems.

It would make more sense to me to advise students to shop for a K3, D7100 or equivalent end of life good quality products than the latest consumer camera.

You know that the one converted recently are the most strict and have to bother others about it ;)

OSV make fine pictures and the few time he show them I enjoy looking at them... Problem is much often I just read some Pentax bashing and Sony propaganda from him and that"s a bit boring.

No issue with that from me, this is just I don't feel the need to downside others on their brand choice or display ;)

I just wonder why we need to justify ourselves to the point we fill the need to trash people that made different choices if we are satified with what we are using?

And what would have been the reaction from you if it was a group of people with K1, 24-70, 70-200 and 150-450 for lenses? This would be as bulky and expensive than Canon...

I don't see any reason to think people with high end Canon or Nikon or Pentax or whatever are to be any different.

Pentax presence is online. The market has changed and you can always buy online, usually cheaper. In many countries laws allows you to return faulty equipment and change your mind too.

The pentax bodies are quite well positionned and reviewed meaning if you try to understand what you buy before buying, there a great chance Pentax is somewhere in your shortlist depending basically if you need a perfect AF or not or WR gear or not.

Each year sales on the internet grows and classic stores just close and see reduced sales. The interrest to spend a lot on brick and mortar stores isn't the same at it was not so long ago. For all people in the country side, in not so big city or in an expensive area, buying online level the difference and give them access to wide variety of products. I wouldn't have buy a Pentax without internet.

Hey even I brought my bed and matress online. Sure I tried it before but 2 things were interresting:
- a french maker with a brand called "maliterie.com" has some shops but they don't care if you buy online or at the shop. The shop are more to allow you to try than anything else. And matress are something were trying is essential.
- I finally didn't buy from them but tried the matress I wanted as a store that was offensive saying that they would not sell something to somebody like me that was too fat because likely they would have a return. So I brough online diretly a good matress I tried there but not at their shop of course.

But really for camera in most places, you can't really try the thing but on the opposite if you are nearly sure you want say a K3, you still have a week or more if you shop online and exchange it for another model on your shoplist on many online retailers. That's actually better service than what the typical brick and mortar does.

I would add that while you can get lot of information on ergonomics/size/weight by trying at the store, you get absolutely no idea on the quality of picture you would get with the gear. That would require quite some time, a bunch of diverse available and interresting subjects to shoot with variety of constraints (flare, low light, detailled landscape, studio...).

So really for a good part, either you rent or ask a friend so you can try the gear for a weekend or something, eithe r the classical store will not provide you more information than form factor, weight, look and a few quick ergonomics tries.

Don't feel bad, even for friends, other systems are different not worse or better. At least it depend on your criteria like the echosystem, the type of pictures you want to take and so on !

The Canonian was right of course. i don't even get why the old lady would have any issue with your gear.

I would even add that'll expect if you take by random people with a camera and you take the group of the one with MF lenses, they may in average get better results than the one with AF lenses.

The 50-200 is a quite interresting lense because it is very small, very light and has a WR version. Despite what the tests say, I continuously see great images taken with it with great colors.

Now one need to know what priorities he has. If the issue is low light performance, the 50-200 is not a good choice. One can replace it with the tamron for a very good price but sure it is quite big/heavy. If that not an option, then in the still big/heavy departement but significantly lighter/smaller, there the 50-135 a really great lense, still with f/2.8.

If one want to be very light, at this range of focal length, I think there no option but to go for primes. Depending of what focal length are the most important DA50, DA70, FA77, DFA100 macro, F135 or FA135 are all quite reasonably small/light and come with fast apperture too. Going with say DA70 + F135 would replace entirely the 50-200. Just crop a bit when the framing doesn't match.

+1 a tamron 70-200 f/2.8 would give you a lot more for low light than moving to K3...

And how exactly are you to do that? If you are not better overall at marketing than others, there no reason you get more out of your investment in it than other, I'am affraid. And from pure observation, I'd say pentax is pretty bad at marketing to begin with, much worse than the average.

It is only because we know less canikon product that we don't see the failures that much or their niche products. Honestly I'am not so sure most Canikon FF models did outsell a K-S1 or K-01. Model like Nikon Df or D4s appear to be a niche products to me.

Because this "viral" thing is theory. Ads on the internet are not especially cheap and many have ads blocker and just don't click. As for videos there a few that go viral, the others nobody remember them. It is not possible for everything to go viral by itself and cost fast less than it should because of that.

Ads are expensive you are right but inventory is too. If you have to have a few bodies and lenses everywhere for everybody to see, that means you need to have a somewhat absolute number of gear just for the show (and if it sell you need a new one to replace it). You also need the demonstration gear. To do that in dozen thousand place in the world is not light investment. Worse it play for every model you have.

On the opposite you can be present everywhere on the internet without any demonstration model and with inventory in maybe 1/10 or 1/100 the number of places.

It is simply not feasible to have that much inventory if you don't see much. It could make sense to increase the presence, so the inventory and Ads but then you might not be able to do it everywhere at the same time and you may limit the number of models and countries where you do it.
