How do they exceed what Pentax does?

I don't think that's it. Pentax cameras probably have low demand compared to Canikon, so production capacity/output is probably not the issue. Good marketing is the issue. People just think that Canikon and Sony are the only choices when it comes to digital imaging products. Most people are completely unaware that Pentax even exists, let alone that they offer better choices for beginners and prosumers at competitive prices.

I think their biggest mistake was forgetting about marketing/ads altogether. It's non-existent, even in Japan where they have a more significant share of the market.

I found out not too long ago that a teacher I know has a Pentax ME super and 50mm f/2 and f/1.4 lenses. His girlfriend also keeps a near mint ME Super with a 50mm f/2. They both love the cameras and he's told me that at the time of purchase Pentax was perceived as the best brand for SLRs. I was surprised to know that the brand was sold alongside Canon and Nikon in Mexico until the mid 90's. He's a Nikon FF user now. Tragic story, I know.

Both cameras have different purposes, however. Pentax doesn't really compete in the high-end sports camera market. It's good to hear about pros using the 645D though.

Ah, but I meant DSLR users. I have seen 2 pentax bodies in the wild, I believe, both film. I think they did sell Pentax in the 80's, but then stopped for some reason.

There's so much potential for marketing the Pentax brand, it's kind of ridiculous. A clever jab at Canikon users during the SuperBowl, for example, would do great things for the brand, and they don't have to spend loads on ads and marketing. It's so sad that Pentax has no presence in some places, though. Like here in Mexico, it's sold NOWHERE, and nobody knows what a Pentax is. There's probably less than 1000 Pentax users in all of Mexico, and that's optimistic. Flip side is, we're few but we're proud owners, and we know our equipment well, which can't be said for the vast majority of Canikon and Sony users.
