The benefit of having it viewable, is that others, besides the OP, may have the same question and can benefit from being able to see it.

Pete, any retailer is free to set their own return policy on their goods, and policies vary greatly. Some stores, especially the bigger ones will let you takes the washing machine back if you don't like the color, other companies have a "All Sales Are Final" policy.
I think we all can see, considering recent events, what turn that thread might take, so as there is no such thing as an "American" return policy, and to prevent any more hard feelings, ruffled feathers, stepped on toes, etc.; it is probably best to just leave the subject alone for a while.
I should also think that living in one of the most beautiful places on earth (judging from what I have seen in pictures), should indeed qualify as one of those compensations for living there that you mentioned. :D
