SMC Pentax-A 70-210mm F4 on Pentax P3 and Fuji Pro 400H.

Helsinki, Suomenlinna fortress as seen from on-board ferry.
Helsinki Southern Harbour as seen from on-board ferry.
A portrait on the ruins of the abandoned chemical factory in Maardu, Estonia. I made a print of this shot and sent it to a friend of mine, who unintentionally became a model.

Cross posted from this thread. The first two images were slightly adjusted in Photoshop (autotone function).

Pentax P3, SMC Pentax-A 70-210 F4 on Fuji Neopan 100 Acros.

If you look at it in full size, it is not particularly sharp. Apparently it is because of the fact, that I was shooting it in P mode, and the aperture was set to wide open.

SMC Pentax A-70-210

- Port of Tallinn and Tallinn city as seen from on-board Eckerö Line M/S Finlandia.
- A view of Helsinki from on-board Eckerö Line M/S Finlandia.
- A view of expanding Länsisatama (Port) in Helsinki. from on-board Eckerö Line M/S Finlandia.

These are some of the shots from my New Year's Eve trip to Helsinki. All of these photos were taken using tripod. First of all it is very windy on the deck of the moving ship. Another thing to keep in mind is vibration coming from the ship's engines. The light was very dim, so to achieve shutter speeds fast enough I had to raise the ISO. Technically I could have opened the aperture to F4, but at 200 mm, the images taken wide open, are too damn soft. The first shot was the hardest to do as it was very tough to focus the lens accurately because of the gusts of wind and the mist in the air.
Post processing these shots was also damn hard. I deliberately underexposed the first shot by roughly 2 stops, to avoid motion blur. When I fixed this, I ended up with an extremely flat looking image. Besides, the noise combined with the mist in the air further decreased the image quality. I was not able to achieve satisying results with Silkypix DS PRO 7, so I switched to DxO 9. After some fiddling I finally managed to get the results that satisfied me. The last image was hard to process because of the dynamic range of the scene. I exposed for highlights, which resulted in a rather dark image, then in SilkyPix DS 7Pro I fiddled around with tone curve, exposure slider and various tools to brighten the shadows. It took me more than half an hour and 5 or 6 versions to get a more or less realistic looking picture.

Some photos from my trip to Warsaw, Poland.

Processed in SilkyPix Developer Studio Pro 7. Click on the images to read description and to see them in full size.

It was my first trip when decided to leave 60-250 at home and take this manual zoom instead. I was not disappointed in the slightest.

IMGP1859 - 210mm F8.0 PS

Pixelshifting can to a certain extent compensate for the softness on the long end at the widest apertures, but fringing is made more evident. At F8 both with PS and without can compete with any modern zoom or prime, though it would required some tweaks to contrast and colour.

Thank you for feedback ! At the short end, this lens produces excellent results even wide open, but the further you zoom, the more you have to stop down, to achieve sharp results and minimize all kinds of fringing. At 210 mm the lens has to be stopped down to around F8 to get the most out of it. I tried many RAW converters with manual glass and in my experience SilkyPix or DCU are the best (sharpness, contrast, colours). So when judging about the quality of the lens, one has to take into account the software used to process the shots from it :) In this very case the colours are slightly yellowish, because the shots were taken in the evening.
When used properly this lens, can indeed compete with modern optics.

- A tugboat. Heavily cropped. 210mm.
- A ferry. Focal length is around 100 mm.
- TV Tower and memorial to those who fell in WW2. 210mm.
- A cargo ferry. 210mm.
- Another ferry approaching the port. The focal length was around 150mm.
- Sunset over Tallinn bay. Seaplane hangars in the background.

All these shots were processed in SilkyPix 7. Quite a number of them were deliberately underexposed, to preserve highlights.

I did not remove chromatic aberrations in this shot. Keep in mind that the lens was stopped down to F8.

Pentax K-3 and Pentax-A 70-210 F4 at 85mm and F8 from a tripod. Processed in SilkyPix Developer Studio Pro 7.

- Tallinn. Old and new. Click image to see it in full size. The lens is amazingly sharp at the short end. Although that is to be expected when you shoot at F8.

Pentax K-3 and SMC A 70-210 F4. I do not remember the focal lengths, but they were most likely around 70mm all the time. Processed in SilkyPix Developer Studio 7. The people were more or less static, so manual focusing was quite easy. I used live view and magnification.

These are shots of a trade union protest action, that took place in Helsinki, Finland. Estonian unions were protesting against the treatment hotel workers receive. Considering the behaviour of the management of the Estonian brunch (the hotel in question is a part of Finnish concern), the decision was made to go to Helsinki and meet the top officials there. The slogans are translated in the descriptions of photos on Flickr. Click to see them in full size.
