Are we really THAT rare?

Pentax is great bang for buck, but sometimes Tamron and Sigma are just cheaper and still plenty good enough. No shop pushed anything on me since I buy my gear online, but after the DA 18-135 my second lens was a $30 Sigma 70-300. (I eventually upgraded to a DA 55-300, but it cost a bit more.) I also bought a broken Sigma 18-200 that I repaired for fun. Even though I prefer the 18-135 I could see the appeal of the Sigma that would sway someone to buy it for the extra range and lower price on the used market.

In particular the Tamron and Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 are both such great performers that I can't justify the extra cost for the Pentax DA* 16-50. (Especially with the worry that the SDM could fail and turn the Pentax into a manual focus lens until I could get it converted.)

That said, I've found that official Pentax lenses are the cat's pajamas if you can afford them. My DA* 50-135 is one of my favorite lenses to use. (I just had to wait a long time to score a good deal on eBay.) I do appreciate that Sigma and Tamron provide Pentax users with extra options though.

Those savings would exhaust my 'wish list' and move on to my 'only dreaming' list. Hello, three ladies! (31mm, 43mm, 77mm) I could even throw in a K-1, but then I'd have to spend more on hard drives. [emoji16]

Though in all honesty I'd spend the savings on home improvements and other things first. [emoji849]

The smart phone fad will only 'pass' when we can do it all with something better.

I'm thinking electronic contact lenses with built in high definition displays controlled by hand gestures, and off course an integrated camera that shoots exactly what you see. Add in wireless earbuds (impants?) for phone calls and music and nobody would want a clunky old fashioned cell phone anymore. 🤣

I wouldn't even be surprised if the pro level DSLR market continues to grow, just not as fast as before. And I'm sure prices will rise when they're no longer subsidized by large sales volumes of entry level cameras.

Except Pentax, of course. They can keep their prices low. [emoji6]

I think this is the demographic that contributed most to the Canikony boom over the past decade as people wanted to go digital but point and shoot cameras and phone cameras were somewhat lacking. I know a people who never went beyond the kit lens, and a few that leave their DSLR on a shelf now that phones have gotten so much better.

DSLR and compact camera sales will only continue to drop as phone cameras keep improving, and Canon and the rest may have to increase prices as they lose entry DSLR sales volume. Pentax already knows how to operate lean, so I'm hoping they can keep their prices as low as they are now.

In days gone by some people would 'disguise' their high end lenses by blacking out or scraping away the recognizable brand name to deter would be thieves. I can't say if it was effective or just paranoid, but it was common enough that I've come across a few used lenses on ebay that have been altered in such ways.

I've also been heard of some people blacking out their cameras to prevent distractions on very reflective surfaces. I once read about someone who blacked out their camera, painted their studio matte black, and also dressed in all black to prevent any reflections in what they were shooting (pottery, I believe). The only problem I see is that leaves a reflection of a floating disembodied head and hands! [emoji1]

I read through the whole 2 pages of that post and even though people gave some advice, it's nowhere near the level of help we receive in this forum. The worst is the guy who said that there are no below average cameras on the market, but then said Pentax is an outdated and dying system, and its only use is if you have K lenses. The most helpful advice was a few people letting him know that Pentax is still a good path forward, even by a guy who uses Canon now. Makes me glad to be part of this Pentax community, regardless of how small, backwards, or quirky we may seem to those who only know how to follow the big names.

Woah... Way too deep for me. I think I need to go meditate for a while. :D

Maybe I'll reach enlightment if I read it through a viewfinder!:p

Not sure about the dry fit material, but you could get a custom embroidered polo shirt from Zillow.com or VistaPrint.com if you upload a Pentax logo.

(That's how I got a baseball cap that says SAAB on the front... :D)
