ChristianRock - the link you posted is exactly the one I mistakenly read assuming it was for the one i was about to buy- mine is the non smc version which has pretty mixed reviews. The review of the one I got myself is this - Pentax-A 28-80mm F3.5-4.5 Reviews - Non-SMC Pentax Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database.
Unfortunately on that review thread there is only one reviewer who has apparently used itwith the modern DSLR, which is why I wished to get some more feedback - especially about getting he maximum aperture reading of 4 inspite of the lens being 3.5 !

I just bought the above mentioned Pentax A 28-80mm - NON SMC version
Well actually I wrongly read the reviews of the Pentax A smc version while looking for reviews ( and there were quite many a good things said about the smc version) and only after ordering it realised my mistake. I needed a wider angled walk around alternative to my RMC Tokina 35-105mm. Moreover it was going really cheap as the photography shop were clearing out lots of stuff plus the zoom ring on this copy had lost its rubber grip. (which doesn't really matter for me actually)
It arived today and the first few test shots straight out of my study window were not bad, Still need to take to town though. I have a month to decide whether to keep it or send it back and that is why I need some help.
On my K5II however it only gives me the widest aperture reading of 4.0 (even at 28mm) although it's a 3.5..!! Any idea why that would be ??
Secondly there is no marking for the size for lens hood/filter on the lens, I am guessing its 58mm... anyone care to clarify this for me please ?.
Lastly I would like an opinion as to whether for modern DSLRs this lens is really a 'keeper' or just a dog (considering not many Pentax Lenses are dogs), and what are the things to keep in mind while using this lens ??- valuable tips, kind of lenshood etc.
Thanks in advance.
