How Many Spare Batteries Do You Have?
Posted By AquaDome

I have three batteries for my K-3 and I don't carry my charger with me. I only charge a battery when it gets low, so the one in the camera may not be 100% when I start the day. If I have to change batteries early in the day, I have one more full battery waiting if I need it. These are all genuine Pentax batteries I purchased when I bought my K-3 new in December of 2013. I use my K-3 every day for work and these batteries have held up like champs.

What, in your opinion, is the most underrated Pentax manual focus 35mm SLR?

The Pentax ME. Lots of folks dismiss it because it is aperture-priority auto-exposure which requires batteries to operate.

The evil work of contract?

"Work for Hire" is a normal way of doing business. Most of the product photography I do is work for hire.
It is the nature of a contract to be negotiable. Tell them you would like to use the images in your portfolio. Maybe they say yes, maybe they say no.

Because their cameras are naked?
There are functional reasons. Preventing reflections in glass is legit. Preventing lectures from brand snobs is legit. Covering the logo because you're ashamed to be wearing a Canon is legit. I doubt it deters theft at all, but it does make the owner appear paranoid.

Getting Asahi Pentax Spotmatic in 2017?

Get a Spotmatic. (I have the SPii and it is a joy to use.)
Maybe it will need repair, maybe it won't. (It probably won't.)
The M42 mount gives you access to many wonderful lenses that sell for ridiculously low prices.
Later, you can get a KX or a PZ1p.

Because I have the memory of a gnat...

It has been my experience and the reported experience of others. I have let many rolls of black & white film languish for weeks or even months before developing and they turned out fine. PanF+ is another matter. I try to process it within a week. A quick search of "PanF+ loses image over time" brings up plenty of tales of woe.

Don't wait too long. PanF+ hates to be kept waiting. Quality of the latent image seems to degrade over a matter of weeks between exposure and development.

You have chosen wisely.
I have all five DA Limited primes (pre-HD). I use the 15 and 35 often. I use the 21 occasionally. The 40 and 70 don't get much use at all.

Try some old Soviet lenses like the Helios 44 or Jupiter 9. They don't have the Auto-Manual switch to confuse us capitalists.

What would you buy?

K35/3.5, DA*16-50, HD-DA20-40 Ltd, Sigma 10-20/4-5.6, & Sigma 17-50/2.8 if the DA*16-50 is too much for you. The constant 3.5 version of the Sigma 10-20 doesn't offer any real advantage over its homely sibling other than constant 3.5. For general purposes and landscapes, that's a boondoggle. The K35/3.5 has become my favorite Pentax lens of all (even over the FA43), no matter what I'm shooting. Conveniently, it's a "normal" on your K3. No auto-focus, no auto-aperture, no zoom - I keep a fluorescent green vest with reflector tape in my camera bag because I'm willing to stand in traffic to get pictures with the K35/3.5.

Moisture Control for Photo Equipment Storage

I use a wooden cabinet with an LED light bulb in it. It keeps dust out and the temperature stays a constant 70 degrees. Mold likes a dark-light cycle and a warm-cool-warm cycle, so nothing grows while the light glows. I also installed a UV-B bulb to sterilize the inside of the cabinet, but I only used it for the first 24 hours.

Laguna Beach Requires a $100+ Permit for ANY Kind of Photo Shoot in Public
Posted By AquaDome

The problem is that "wedding photographers" take over the beach every day of the week and chase regular beach-goers away. And it isn't just the beach. It's every fountain and gazebo and rosebush. And it isn't just for weddings. It's for birthdays, baptisms, communions, engagements, pre-weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, etc. The less-than-professional photo mob is a royal pain in the ass if you live in California. Laws have been on the books for years requiring any form of paid photography in public places to have a permit - this helped the film industry keep low-budget competitors out of their turf. But the "friend of the family" who is actually getting paid cash to take photos doesn't think the law applies to him. This clarifies it.

Filters

My filter strategy is to buy the filters I need in the sizes I need. It is expensive. What I need now is a filter storage strategy.
For lenses with filter threads of 72mm or greater, I use Lee & Singh-Ray filters. That is even more expensive and needs another storage strategy.
While it would be nice if Pentax had standardized filter sizes across their lens sets (Oh, wait - they did - 49mm for the M lenses, 52mm for the K lenses...), I'm currently supporting multiple Pentax systems (M42, K/K-AF, DA, 645-A), plus Nikon Ai/AiS & AF systems, plus several other systems, some of which require Series V, VI, & VII filters with different-sized press-on hoods. The cheapest solution would be for me to standardize instead of Pentax.

DA 35 2.4 vs M 35 2.8

The M35/2.8 is soft wide-open. The DA35/2.4 is a better lens in many regards. However, it depends on what look you're going for. The M35/2.8 is capable of some surrealistic, even psychedelic out-of-focus areas. Some folks call it "busy" or "distracting". I call it a feature.
