Like the original poster, I too have had people (clients, usually through facebook messages) scoff when they hear I don't use a Canon Mark iii, I have found that when THOSE clients don't pass me up due to my camera, they make me hate my life. Yeah, it's good for Ricoh to have their name on a great camera like the K-3, Pentax is a funner word to say though, and we all know Pentaxian sounds better than Ricohian.
If you feel self-conscious about your camera, put on a 300mm lens with a hood and walk around a park, kids and teens will berate you with comments like "Whoa! Nice camera!" and "How much did that cost?" Then you'll feel like a pro again.
The internet is changing how people communicate, Wal-Mart and Costco have changed the way people buy. Canon and Nikon are the only changeable lens cameras people see, because most people only look at what's on Wal-Mart shelves and facebook. Those people are not the majority, but they are the loudest complainers. Don't worry, photographers will have bigger problems in five years, we'll forget what name is on our cameras completely.
P.S. There's a guy on my block who took all the "Acura" logos off his car and replaced them with Cadillac logos he bought on eBay, it's only a matter of time before this happens with everything.
