Pentax K-x - General purpose lens to buy?

I think the reason that people aren't suggesting the DA*16-50 is the cost, the fear of SDM failure (although you can convert to screwdrive... who signs up for that knowing it's quite possible that they would need to?), and how it kind of lost the comparison test here performed by the PF staff. I mean, why pay more for worse?

It's barely wider on the wide end of field of view than the Tamron 17-50 and it has a WR rating (whatever that's worth here) so it has some advantages, but is it worth over 3x the price of the Tamron, or nearly 3x the Sigma? I vote no. I've honestly thought about stockpiling Tamron 17-50's while they're still available as I think they'll go up in value when new stock runs out at main vendors.

The Tamron and Sigma 17-50 are screw drive. Sigma 17-70 is DC. It's kind of a toss-up; screw-drive AF lenses seem to almost always have a hard stop at infinity, DC like the 18-135 lacks this, and I don't like that. This is probably my biggest issue with the 18-135 and really is the only issue I can think of that isn't immediately obvious.

The 18-135 is not impressively sharp throughout its entire zoom range. Things start to fall off around 75mm or so and continue outward to 135. From about 20mm to 40-something it's quite sharp, especially stopped down a bit. It's a great lens. The Weather Resistant rating provides peace of mind that a bit of rain or snow is not going to be an issue.

That said, Tamron 17-50 is probably more useful as it goes wider and is faster, making it potentially a better fit for the uses listed. Current pricing is excellent as well. I wouldn't consider the Pentax 16-50.
