Yes, I think it's time to tune up my ignore list as well. The information we have on the DA 11-18 so far sounds like an awesome lens to anchor the wide side of any crop shooter's kit. I used to think that k-mount land could have really used the Tokina 11-16 and this lens removes that thought completely if we can ignore pricing. Which really should be done when someone is going to seriously consider a Limited or star lens from Pentax.

I think the price history of the DA16-50 would be a decent, though not perfect, indicator of how pricing will be for the 11-18.

This lens and something like the Tamron 17-50 and a couple small primes would be an awesome collection of lenses. Really interested in how it performs when it finally comes to market.

Yeah, sometimes the vendors like B&H don't use camera specific images when there's a 3rd party product like a lens, even when there are differences. Have to be careful about that.

For one reason or another it seems like Pentax gets the most support from the 3rd party lens builders in offering in-body aperture control.

Are we talking about the 15-30 now? I thought this thread was about the upcoming 11-18 AW. And I have a challenge believing that changing between a couple non-WR primes is easier than leaving a single AW rated zoom on the camera body. I just can't. And I honestly think that extends to the 15-30 as well.

This is why zooms are seen as convenient. I think you know that so there has to be some kind of communications breakdown going on here.

Penta-club? What's that?

And I'm sorry but I can't see two primes in the bag being easier to deal with than a single zoom. Like, come on, seriously?

I wonder if the old Sigma 8-16 would be a good building photog lens. I think the DA 15 is okay in this respect but I'm only doing this as a hobbyist. I can see where the 15 isn't probably the best tool if this is something serious.

If I was doing a lot of building stuff I would want a zoom, I think, to afford more flexibility in shooting.

Yeah, I'm not buying the 11-18 unless I have a business case to do so, and right now I make no money from photog shenanigans. I'm very happy with my DA 15.

I've not used the DA 14 or 12-24, so, grain of salt with this next bit; I have my doubts that the 12-24, at 15mm, is any better at being a lens than the DA 15. The little guy is a seriously nice piece of glass.

To each his own; this lens actually kind of excites me. Guess I never felt that way about the 12-24. It's that max aperture, and then knowing it's a star lens, it will probably perform quite well wide open. The weather resistance also makes it quite nice.

I could honestly see getting this lens, a K-70, and trying to get work doing real estate & architecture shooting. Reviews and sample shots will tell the whole story.

I can't imagine that many people would buy the 12-24 instead of the 11-18 unless it's for cost reasons. 18mm is a perfect spot to change lenses to something else that covers about that point out to something longer. This isn't to say the 12-24 isn't without merit, it's just not a star lens, and Pentax usually does very nice things when they stick that label on the side.

I don't want Ricoh to spend any money on man hours to get KAF4 working on the K-5 series and I own a K-5 series camera that I have no intention of leaving. I want that money spent on new lenses, new ways for cameras to communicate with other equipment, and new ways to connect with how owners use the equipment. This is just my own opinion so take it with a grain of salt.

I also don't want them to rework existing lenses like the 18-55 to be a KAF4 mount or use PLM focusing unless it either aids in producing a good product for the same or less cost, or if it brings real benefits to the user. The guy that uses the kit lens does not care about .1 sec faster focusing or saving a couple ounces.

If I'm really honest, I'm okay with getting cut off from these new lenses that utilized the KAF4 mount (I know it's just one today but I am sure that will change) as this is what will allow new tech to actually reach our hands. I'm using a K-5 II and I'll just have to suffer through using the existing 55-300's instead of the PLM version. Hardly a deal breaker for me. Honestly I doubt anyone is really that upset about this.

You know, I want to say yes, before we've seen a single review or sample shots. Cross-frame IQ is going to be better, I think, than the 10-20. There may be times where the brighter max aperture comes in handy. The hardware quality & ruggedness seems almost assured to blow the Sigma out of the water. AF performance will probably be somewhat better.

You loose a mm on the wide end which is nothing to sneeze at. You loose two at the long end which I think will be less noticeable. I think I would have a hard time getting excited about the Sigma once this lens is available. I could see someone keeping the Sigma 8-16 after this lens shows up but a lot of the other stuff out there now isn't of much interest save for cost (assuming the buyer is shooting crop and not full frame, obviously).

Short version: I think very much so as long as you can justify whatever they want to charge.

A 17-70 f2.8 constant would be pretty big. It would also be a great way to replace the DA*16-50. It would give a head and shoulders advantage over the Tamron and Sigma 17-50's. Some merit to this idea.

I can see that people are clamoring for one of the lenses I suggested needs to be developed, the D-FA 18 WR Ltd.

It's hard to know what they'll do next, but I agree, this piles in quite nicely to the existing lens lineup. What might make sense is a real overhaul of the DA*16-50. A problem here might be the continued existence of the Tamron and Sigma 17-50's as they both seem nicer and much much better value. But that's somewhere down the road.

A 12-28 f2.8 zoom would be really large. I'm glad this is a somewhat smaller piece of hardware, something that I might want in my own bag, instead of something that feels like you're "carting it around".

A 12-28 f4 might make more sense. Make it internally focus, and on crop that would be an awesome focal range.

Maybe it's a switch for the warp drive?

What surprises me the most about some of the responses in this thread is the mention of Tokina, "Tokina DNA in this lens", "Tokina rebadge", etc. This lens is cool! It looks all Pentax to me! We'll learn more soon!

Oh, and I think fsge is right, this lens removes any need for the 12-24 in the lineup. The DA 14 is gone as well. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if both of these lenses have been out of production for some amount of time and it's existing stock for sales lately. So watch the stores for clearance sales OR get ready for an awesome new wide angle zoom option in k-mount land.

I always thought the Tokina 11-16 sounded like a great lens and k-mount land could use something like that. This has the potential to be even better, and I'll take the added range. I don't think I'm in the market for this lens; I have the DA 15 already, so I'm in the sweet spot in the range, and I like some things about the DA 15 a lot. But if I didn't already own that lens, I could see a real case for this 11-18.

It seems like we've got the 85, 50, and 35mm primes coming on deck and then this 11-18 zoom. I'm curious what's next.
