I can't help much with this since those buttons don't work on my K5IIs, but have a look here. Or here.
I believe that they can only be programmed together, not individually. There are 4 of them so that no matter whether the camera/lens is in landscape or portrait orientation, there is at least one button in a convenient position.

Finally had the opportunity to take some pix recently, here is a Zebra Finch:

I'm guessing a collared sparrowhawk, I think the goshawk has a more prominent eyebrow giving it a more intimidating look and is bigger (although it is hard to judge size from that shot). Great shot, even through the window!

Great photo! But not too good about the lens, very disappointing.
Hopefully you can get it fixed without too much hassle.

I have mine in the Flipside 400 too, it is a snug fit but not tight with hood in position, on the K5IIs body. I find the plethora of straps on the Flipside get in the way when trying to access the camera in a hurry so I am thinking of getting the ThinkTank Digital Holster 30 V2.0. My main concern with that is the diameter of the hood vs the ID of the extension. From the info I have been able to find I think it will be a very tight fit.

Excellent shot!
I find the same issue with these small birds in that even with the 150-450 vs the 55-300 I used before, AF on the K5IIs is not fast enough still, the K1 must be better in this respect. I hope that the next APS-C flagship has substantial AF improvements.

I have suspected that too, my ISOs seem to be higher than I thought they would be, even in good light.
I use TAv and let the ISO float up to 3200 (on the K5IIs) and generally try to keep the shutter speed around 1/1000s for action and aperture at 7.1 (which I seem to recall is the sharpest - probably read it somewhere here). I have no hesitation in using this lens wide-open though, if I need to.

Thanks Anthony, I had trouble getting focus due to the grass stem above his eye.
Nice Jacana(?) BTW!

One from yesterday, handheld, uncropped, obliging little fellow, normally they scuttle off into the grass before I get the camera ready.

More power to it! We pay for every bit of rain we get here, with an influx of bugs.

How do you find the Rogue? I had a look on their website and saw that they say specifically it is not compatible with Pentax (among others). I guess if it fits the K3 it would fit the K5IIs?

Personally, I would be loath to give up the 2 stops of light despite the light being fairly bright here most of the time. I definitely would not use one if the TC was attached. Maybe on a F2.8 telephoto lens?

I think both technique and subject distance play the main role in sharpness.
The BIF shots with the TC I posted back in post #618 are certainly not razor sharp but they were handheld at a distant subject. The handheld shot of a parrot with the TC in post #549 is sharp but the subject distance was only about 5m.
Some people such as Christiandre who thought they had a bad copy have produced some very sharp images after getting used to this lens. I wonder how Jatrax is getting on with his copy?

OK, fair enough. I would have liked to get closer for those shots but they were just a quick opportunity as I drove past.
On another note, I drove past the same spot again and realised I overestimated the distance, it was more like 150m. I have edited the original post.

I think you should be able to get much better results with the TC on a tripod. This was basically the worst case scenario, being handheld, wide open aperture and distant subject, although the light was good.

I am currently thinking about a gimbal too, the one I am keen on currently due to its reasonable price is the Manfrotto 393. The main issue I see with it may be the fact that the double-sided design blocks access to the focus ring, but there could be enough of a gap there. BTW, dimensions of the Manfrotto are not on their website (a major oversight IMO) but I found them here .

A few from today, all handheld with Pentax HD 1.4 TC, wide open (f/8) at 630mm, subject distance approx. 150m.
About 10% keepers from burst mode but I had the wrong AF setting to start with. Not super sharp, but given the subject distance and handholding with the TC, overall I am happy enough with them.
I want this tree to myself!
100% crop
Go away!
100% crop
Finally the tree is mine.
100% crop
I can't seem to get the EXIF link above each photo like some posts have, maybe it is something to do with using the 'Insert Album Photos' link under the smilies to the right of the message pane?
