I have a different take, but a similar idea. I process a round of pictures, post some for my family -- then walk away for a few weeks. I go back and revisit the series later, and often times, things that looked good before, don't now. It helps me to distance myself from the emotion (joy, or otherwise) while taking the pictures, allowing me to be a little more objective later. That's one of those editing fundamentals I learned while writing, and it works pretty well for my photography, too. chances are pretty good that if I can get the same smile on my face a month after not having seen it, then it's a quality shot for me. Or I might see something small, like a different cropping angle, that ends up pulling the whole thing together.

I think the composition of the original puts more isolation on the poles/birds, and prefer it that way. For my eye, the left-side crop pulls me more to the shore. I really like the overall color. Makes me want to crack a beer, and just zone out :)
