Nope, the RAW image also has them that big. My PP mostly focuses on adding contrast (via curves) to bring out the Milky Way.

The one on the left is Altair and the 3 on the right are Saturn (left), Mars (top), Antares (right)
I assume they are that bright because this was a longer shot so I captured more light and when I do my edits to enhance the Milky Way they are also brightened.

So my question is when you are taking the longer exposures how do you handle the foreground blurring? For me, I imagine it would be easier to take some shots of the bridge then move up the hill so you can see the whole Milky Way with no obstruction and nothing blurring.
Maybe shorter shots with the O-GPS1? When I do longer shots around 5 minutes I have significant blurring of the foreground which makes it harder to then comp in correct foreground.

My guess is that he is taking multiple shots just and merging into a panorama so then the whole shot is all parts taken from the center of the lens and not its edges, he crops the sides where the trailing occurs. I plan to try that when I go out next to shoot the stars.
But if mikeSF wants to tell us all his secrets, I will not argue :)
Another thing I have realized is that in these comps the images are not taken at the same spot. Or I should say my theory is that the sky images are taken with nothing in the way to get a full image of the sky. Then an image of the foreground is taken by itself. So an example is that awesome image of the bridge mikeSF did. Instead of all shots taken at the same spot. You have one picture of the bridge, then you move to a spot where you can see the whole sky and take your sky photos and them combine in post. Up until now I had always taken both pictures at the same location which causes its own issues. Eventually I will get smarter :)
Hey a reminder to all. The Geminid Meteor Shower is next Monday morning! The 14th. Best time is between Midnight and 4 AM on the 14th (Sunday Night/Monday Morning) I really hope the weather works.

Here is an comp I took in Moon Lake Utah back in September.
Foreground image at 275 seconds at ISO 1000
Background image at 300 seconds at ISO 1000 with the O-GPS1
Edited in Photoshop. I still need to get better at comps!

Yes it can. I have the K5 and I use the O-GPS1 to take shots up to 5 minutes long. So the K5IIs does this as well.
The K3II just has the GPS Built in so you do not have to buy the O-GPS1 unit.

Anyone know if there is a calculator to compare different lens focal lengths and Apertures.
IE I have a Rokinon 14mm F2.8 Lens So I tend to take up to 25 second shots for night sky.
But say if I was looking into the Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art I could take up to 10 second shots.
So which one would get the most light within those seconds. There is probably some formula to determine this but I do not know it.

I went out to get some practice with the O-GPS1. The location wasn't the most scenic but it was dark. I did some simple edits in PS but those pesky clouds! Arg!

How did you get ISO 4000 on a K5? I get 3200 then 6400.

Also check your local school district and/or college/university. Many have Community Education classes that are fairly cheap. Under $75 here locally. Or also check your local camera shops they could have some classes. I did a class through my local university and also my school district and then took a few trips through the University to a National Park where I had a blast.
Also, check into Find your people - Meetup It is a site to set meetings for any interest. There are clubs for photography, hiking, eating at new restaurants, work related stuff. Just a ton of different groups but there could be a few Photo ones in your area that will have different events. I have groups that go do things to groups that discuss different items. All informative.

I believe the center star is Vega based on what I am seeing in Stellarium.
On the right side the lower one is Antares and the the one above and slightly to right is Saturn.
I haven't tried jupiter and the moons. But one thing with this is that you just keep trying. I made mistakes in that Panorama. You might not know them but I do. So the next time I will learn from those mistakes and my image should be even better.
If you do not have the remote control you can still set the button to timed delay so it might help as well.

Thanks. I have some 11X14 & 12X18 prints being done @ Costco. Picking them up in the next hour. Excited and scared to see how they look printed. I never printed anything at these sizes but decided to try it with these shots.

Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw.
I did some basic edits in ACR then brought it into Photoshop. There I separated out the foreground and the background and applied curves. Just curves.
I learned it from a Photographer named Royce Bair. His blog is here: Into The Night Photography

I actually learned the steps by taking a class he had here in Salt Lake yesterday. He also has an ebook coming out in a month or so with the steps as well.

Cannot let this thread drop of the first page of K5 so adding an album I am working on. I learned a new way to do post and trying it out with some photos I took last year at Mirror Lake Utah.

Remember that was just me going back maybe 10 pages and checking images and the lenses. There are a lot more pages with a lot more lenses in use. But there was a good selection there.
Personally I like the Rokinon 14mm F2.8 because I got some nice images and it is fairly cheap @ $300. Although next time I might of ordered the Vivitar version (supposedly it is the same lens just different branding) because the Vivitar has a removable hood and the Rokinon does not.
Also check out these guys on lens recommendations. They only discuss wide lenses though.
