Ha that was my exact upgrade path. I actually remember being slightly disappointed at the build quality of the new K-30 compared to the K-100D.

The K-30 aperture system had to be repaired on the K-30, within 2 years of ownership, at which point I reverted to the K-100D again whilst it was being repaired.
I sold the K-100D because it was relatively useless at focussing, which was just how it was -it wasn't a fault/breakdown as such, but that aside it was still going strong.

Pentax, if they keep good records, should be able to narrow down exactly which batches were dodgy, and the total number of cameras that could be affected over time. Maybe via the serial numbers they could even do the right thing and offer to replace the faulty components...

No, this is related solely to Pentax. I couldn't care less about other companies.
I and many others purchased a Pentax that failed well before it should have, and Pentax have stayed quiet on the matter.

Why the urge to justify a failure by referring to the competition?
These products have failed, and Pentax hasn't done anything about it, if it's outside their 2 year standard warranty. That's the core issue to me. Not saying anyone else is better (as I'm not qualified to do so) but am saying that Pentax's response has not been good enough.

Let's be clear around the wording here, using manual aperture lenses is not a solution to the problem, it's a workaround to remove that task from the camera.

Also whilst failures do happen to other companies, what is Pentax doing about this one? How are they supporting their customers. Design/component failures happen, but it's how the company deals with this that counts.

For those affected, the problem has occurred. Be it a common problem or not, Pentax has still not come to their aid.

If we new the batch numbers/serial numbers of those that were failing, then that would be a very useful warning indicator when purchasing new or 2nd hand.
Knowing that only 2% overall are affected doesn't help you identify if you are in the blast zone or not.

I think of more interest would have been serial numbers of cameras affected or not. I suspect the faulty components were all used within a block of cameras, and that would give some direct to owners and potential owners of the likelihood of failure.

Yeah don't worry, it will be fine if you don't have the faulty part on your camera, and fine right up until it's not if you do.

Those who have experienced the failure have every right to be dissatisfied about it. In fact I'd call that a completely natural reaction for anyone who buys a camera new, that subsequently fails in less than 2 1/2 years, and finds it's out of warranty and the manufacturer won't do a damn thing about it.

Me too :)

Agree. I sold my K100d, not because it was faulty, but because I wanted better autofocus abilities and I wanted a video capture ability.
I used my K-30 in the same way as my K-100d, but the K-30 failed in under two years.
I've read quite a few comments here saying it's a consumer grade camera, you shouldn't use it too much etc, and believe that's just a total copout. They sound like Pentax PR, if Pentax had actually publically said anything about it at all.

For those with a faulty component, this has ruined their camera almost completely, and Pentax has done nothing about it for those outside of their standard warranty period. Many K-30 owners cannot afford to, and should not have to, replace their cameras every two 1/2 years.

Weather sealing seems redundant over engineering on a camera that in my case lasted less that two years, at an average click rate.

If Pentax are being professional about this, they would have identified what the root cause is, and what batches were affected.

This survey would then be telling them what they should already know.

My K-30 failed. Manufactured 2012, shutter count at 7,500 at failure.

Picked up another one, already known to have failed, to investigate with.
2012 also, and has shot 11,000 but not entirely sure when it failed.

Honestly though, I do not believe there is any connection between shutter count and failure. It's a parts defect issue, so it's a case of does you camera have these parts installed or not. It's of little use to sit there and say my camera doesn't have this issue, because I'm not saying it's model specific. It's a parts issue, and if you haven't been affected, then you are lucky. For those who have been affected, Pentax has failed them.

There are no serial markings on the faulty parts, so only Pentax themselves will be able to track the dodgy batch, and identify which camera's had those parts installed. Pentax have stayed quiet, have not publicly acknowledged that a problem even exists.

By all accounts there was a part defect, that can affect some models. It's the same mechanism and design as always on this model l range (lower end entry-consumer orientated), so the design itself is not to blame.

It affects some cameras at different times, and some remain unaffected.

If all the ones that had failed did so at the same time we'd be talking recall, but Pentax have quietly funded the warranty period replacements and said nothing public about it.

I feel sorry for anyone affected outside of the warranty period, as Pentax just don't want to know. It might be a weather sealed rugged unit, but a tiny component is rendering it close to useless very prematurely, in terms of how long the rest of the unit will keep operating for.
