You bring up software in an interesting way, so I'd suggest that Pentax could get a lot of bang for its buck by spending R&D money of software development, both in camera and with its software for PP, tethering, and apps. They seem to have seen the light with the Theta, opening it up for development by outside developers. It also seems like at Pentax the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

Question: anyone know why the Japanese seem to be so behind the beat with software development generally?

Of course I do----I've been shooting since the '70's. And that doesn't help with cramped ergonomics. One would think you'd take my word for it that it didn't work as well for me, since I've owned the 3 cameras (plus the NEX7 and the Sony A850 before that...), but I guess not.

But I also don't have 3 hands, so holding a flash off axis is more difficult with a badly balanced camera lens combination (yes, I have a flash bracket, but I also like to use flash further off axis, and lightstands aren't always practical if you are moving around)

Ergonomics and imbalance are always "a thing". Little is perfectly balanced, but some combinations balance better then others.

Well, I came to Pentax from Sony, A7R. Great camera, but...mirrorless really isn't the second coming. It's nice for some things, and you trim your weight and size down a bit, but that comes with its own problems, such as cramped ergonomics and lens-body imbalances (although this last has improved a bit). For me, the K1 series is about as compact as is completely comfortable strictly from the standpoint of usage. The Z is better. And while there are times when the current crop of EVF's are handy, most of the time the OVF is still better---and I liked the A7R's EVF! I'd rather see Pentax concentrate on their niche---they are not going to be the # 1,2, or 3 company. But they could be a very healthy 4. Just work on improving what they have, AFAIC.

I voted for a K1III.

I think with a new sensor, I'd rather keep the form factor basically as it is, same battery, & etc.
I'd like to see AF improvements, just to stop the complaints; I don't need it
Please have more than one color for LV focus peaking
Better video (should be possible with a new sensor)
Touch screen is handy for focus and video
Better tethering
Built-in wireless flash control (non-optical)---although this could need a bit more room in the body, hopefully just a bump.
