Xmas music on rotation on Spotify right now, all medieval, renaissance, and baroque with a few other periods thrown in. I'll track down some cuts, but this album seems very good: You Tube |

I'd like to see Larkin Poe, with Sierra Hull, Feist, and Suzanne Vega in an all acoustic set doing their own songs and covers---recorded for the future.

I got to see John Cage in concert at u of Delaware back in the mid '70's (I was going to another school within driving distance)---"sold out" ( it was free), people had to sit in the aisles and stand outside the doors.
Amazing.

I was not a deadhead until I got to college and learned more about them. A buddy (may he RIP---died of AIDS) had reel-to reel concert tapes, and they were a stunning revelation. I saw them twice in concert, one was one of the worst concerts I've been to---bad venue, they were fine---but also the second was one of the best, they were fantastic.

Saw Khruangbin in concert just shy of a year ago. They were awesome. But it may be my final concert---super rotten experience with such a rude crowd. My daughter confirmed it---she says it's getting worse and worse. Not worth paying the bux for.

Lots of people have stated that Monk's Columbia years were his worst, but the quartet he had for those years are on balance my favorite. He had "better" players accompany him, but Charlie Rouse I feel is the best sax man he ever had, which is saying something since the list of sidemen is long and includes Coltrane and the great and IMO underrated Steve Lacy. But there's something about Rouse's playing---the quality of his sound, his phrasings, the contemplative quality---that I think balanced so well with Monk's playing, and I think Rouse really understood the compositions. Maybe it's just because my first Monk albums were Mysterioso and Monk's Greatest Hits. My mother gave them to me on the recommendation of a record store clerk. I was 12, I think. She had no idea....changed my life.

You just missed our big Laurie Anderson exhibition at the Hirshhorn. One of the pieces, a gallery sized installation, is going to stay up permanently, however.
And I used to have that Taj album, old school. Very popular back in the day, then off the radar....

Never realized how weird he was. His personal musical history makes me feel better about not knowing him until now...he just wasn't as interested in performing as he was in teaching.

As far as missed concerts, my big regrets are missing Monk and Mingus.

On a Ravel binge. Here's a great one, the Piano Concerto in G Major with Ravel conducting(!) and his favorite pianist, Marguerite Long on piano: You Tube |
src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BZ9EGecUBBw?controls=1" allowfullscreen> |
By turns strange and dark, then lyrical and beautiful. Obviously not a great recording (1932 I think), but I still love this one the best. I have not heard a more beautiful performance on piano than this one. And of course, with Ravel conducting, you've got to assume this one is at least as faithful to his vision as any other, if not more so.
