Don’t hold your breath. One of their testers, when challenged on the moving target test (the bicycle test) with the K1 admitted that they don’t even try for consistency because “the real world isn’t consistent”. I don’t like the term gobsmacked, but that is what I was.
They fall back on the “we are a review site, not a test site” lame excuse when their methodology is challenged, yet they put pseudo tests out there.
The entire review portion of their website is a confidence game.

I admit my hearing is not what it once was, but the D FA* 50/1.4’s focusing is pretty much silent. To me this is just another example of DPR leaving their integrity in the parkade in the name of driving a hit piece against a non advertising company.
It is also yet another example of DPR’s lack of standards or criteria.

Edge performance wide open is one of those things that is difficult to accomplish without throwing major money at the lens. Pentax fast 50s have always had decent edge performance at wide apertures, but the D FA 50 is head and shoulders above anything I’ve seen before.
I’ve always bought fast standard lenses because I wanted better low light focusing, I always accepted that I was getting at best an f/2.8 lens with a 2 stop brighter screen. The D FA* 50 gives me a very usable f/1.4 rather than an OK in the center but make sure the edges are supposed to be out of focus because they will be anyway.

Looking at the DPR samples, for the most part the types of pictures they took to show that they could torture some chromatic aberrations out of the lens would be better served, or at least not hurt, by shooting at a somewhat smaller aperture where the problem is gone anyway.

I think you will have to work really, really hard if you want to. If you look at their test, it is pretty obvious that they worked a lot harder with the Pentax lens than they do with those from other companies to get their results.

DPReview applies varying standards in their reviews, I suspect depending on who is spending money on advertising with them.
They also do not apply the same criteria in their so called tests.

They got caught out in a big way some time back. I believe it was the K1 to K1II comparison, though I could be wrong. Their test procedure was blatantly flawed, to the point the “test” was nothing more than a hit piece.
Then they doubled down, and defended the indefensible.
I’m not worried about antagonizing DPR reviewers. They are not neutral in their reviews and deserve whatever defecation comes their way.

As much as I like most of the features that Pentax puts on their cameras, I suspect that they are leveraging sensor movement into features because they can add value very cheaply by doing so.
It would be interesting to do a poll to find out how many users take advantage of more than shake reduction on a regular basis.

I never really liked the bokeh of the 55/1.4

Yup. That’s what I saw too. Kinda harsh bokeh and ugly halos that almost look like they came from a mirror lens.

I don't know about 10% better than f/8, but 5.6 is the best aperture for this lens, and at f/5.6 it is quite awesome.

It would be a pretty incredible lens for outdoor portraiture on APS-C, though the model would need either have a flawless complexion or look like Sam Elliot. I think it would be a bit of a waste in the studio because it's wonderful bokeh wouldn't show as much.

I didn't really like the bokeh from the DA*55/1.4. Nice sharp lens though it needs to be stopped down a bit. One of my best photos was shot with it.
It's a great studio lens, the bad bokeh isn't important.

Old post to be replying to, I realize, but on APS-C, I think the 70 is a better lens than the 77. Their rendering is very similar, with the 70 requiring significantly less working distance. When we got a room with enough length to really back up, I would be using the A*85/1.4 for full lengths, but that was just because I could. The 70 held it’s own in the studio.
I have the 43, I quite like it, but most of the time its the wrong lens for me. When its the right lens, it is very nice indeed.
