I just listed off in my head lenses from 24mm to 200mm that I figure I am done with, especially 50mm lenses that I have acquired a lot of over the years. I'm not using them, probably never will, and I've recently gotten past the whoever dies with the most toys wins attitude.
My goal will be to sell a dozen and a half lenses and half a dozen or more film bodies if anyone still uses them, and use the proceeds to put at least a dent in the cost of the D FA* 85/1.4 and D FA 80-200/4 lenses.

For my sake, yeah it would be nice if it sells in the $1.5K range. For your sake, take $1K off of that number......
This presumes I am willing to sell it. I have a hard time letting go of lenses.

I’m pretty sure I am on record stating I wouldn’t be buying one unless it was much better than the A*85/1.4 lens, however I expect that’s not gonna matter very much to me, I will just buy the thing. Ironically, I expect my gently used A*85/1.4 will sell for the same amount as the price of the new DFA*85 1.4.

I expect the 85mm to very much be a longer version of the D FA* 50/1.4. If this is the case, the only advantages the 77 will have will be size and price.
The 77 will appeal to people who want a less expensive portrait length lens with decent rendering and people who have a need for smaller lenses.

I suspect there will be much justification for not buying the new 85mm lens based on size and price, not much on how the 77 renders an image compared to the 85.

It has quite a bit of light fall off at the edges, and mine is a rather soft in the corners.

The last dog and pony show I was at this past spring, the Ricoh rep had been told so little that he didn’t even have any Pentax or Ricoh gear set up at his booth. They are carrying tight lipped to an extreme when their own rep doesn’t display their equipment at a product show.

According to my now retired Pentax rep, there were less than a thousand FA*200/4 macro lenses made. I managed to snag one in 2005 through great luck and the fact that I had a great relationship with Pentax Canada. At the time I was quoted just under Can$3k for it. They found one in some American sales reps kit, they were no longer available new. Pentax imported it for me, did a full refurbishment on it and sold it to me for under half of the new price I had been quoted.

As an aside, it is a better lens than most people have been led to believe it is.

If anyone thinks the 85 is going to be anything other than a lens that is at the top of the performance scale, they have obviously not been paying attention. Pentax is not SIG-nificant MA-lfunction.
Focal length is related to the distance from the rear nodal point to the sensor. Where the diaphragm is located has nothing to do with focal length.

It’s about the right size considering it’s the stablemate of the D FA*50/1.4. Like it or not, these new lenses are designed to have excellent edge performance at wide open apertures. It’s a glass heavy ambition.

.....And optical quality and flare resistance. It’s just all round a much better lens.

Mostly I'm with you on this. The only caveat I have is if they are charging big bucks for a mundane lens that needs software to make it good.

I think it’s guaranteed that Sony is baking lens corrections into their raw files. It’s not like as if the Sony zombie brigade would care.

They’ve been playing with that design since the mid 1950s.
Let’s not be so shallow as to use the argument of whataboutism.
Since you got into the Pentax system for well built compact APS-C SLR cameras, you will be pleased to know that they are still making them and even recently released yet another lens for the format.
Full frame is not APS-C. If you don’t want to buy a D FA 50mm lens because it’s big, you can buy the DA 50/1.4, which is much smaller, a pretty decent lens, and is designed for your format, not the next one up.

While we are at it, why aren’t we complaining about the size and weight of the 645 equipment? Don’t let the fact it doesn’t share a lens mount with it’s smaller cousins deter us. It’s still a different format.

There is nothing like not reading the manual to make oneself look like a retard. Or worse, they did read the manual and did their moving water test anyway. I’m quite certain that the clowns on DPR are all drunk before 8:00 am and stay that way until they pass out.

^^^^^^This^^^^^^^
People will gripe about anything I guess. They need to get a life and get off Twitter for a while and let their frontal lobe recover.
One thing I’ve noted is the complainers haven’t used the lens, and are doing a Ken Rockwell on it. DPReview did what can only be looked at as a hit piece on it. Or at least they tried.
They found scenes that were much more difficult than anything they have applied to any other lens to try to make it fail, and frankly, they failed. This is typical of a DPR. They are shamelessly biased towards their advertisers and have been caught out numerous times faking results.
In their test of the D FA 50, they went so far as to describe the out of focus blur from a green chain link fence as LoCa. They moved the yardsticks from bias to outright lying with that one.
Out of curiosity, why are we comparing the Pentax lens to an ancient design rangefinder lens that is a stop slower? This sort of thing shows the same sort of stupid bias that DPReview shows. Let’s compare an apple to a banana and complain that the banana isn’t an apple. What, are we fourteen or something? It’s just really dumb to try to pull that sort of stuff off in a room full of adults.
It’s like little kids who didn’t get exactly what they wanted for Christmas, while their big brother did. They didn’t get exactly what they wanted so they are going to have tantrums until they do.
They should consider growing up instead.

This is what the diaper brigade should be comparing the Pentax lens to. But they won’t because it doesn’t fit the narrative they are trying to invent.

The lens is as big as it is if it’s too large or too expensive or too whatever for your taste, there are much smaller alternatives. The FA 50/1.4 is still available new, and by f8 it’s getting close enough to the D FA lens that you probably wouldn’t be able to see that the D FA glass was better. If you can’t see that the glass is better, you need to open your eyes. The glass is most definitely better. As for it not being worth It’s size, do you design lenses? What, in your opinion, should they have done to bring the size and weight down while not compromising it’s optical properties?
