local store pricing

I like to support local businesses but not if it is going to cost me a lot of money. I'm in the market for a K100D to give as a gift that B & H has listed at $461.95 plus the $50.00 rebate. Called my local camera store and asked if they would match the price. Their answer was they will match prices from brick and mortar stores but not online only sellers. So yes, they will match price. There could be another side effect of buying locally. The more they sell, the more they will stock. If more of us did this we might see inventories of Pentax items increase. Just a thought.

On another issue, while deciding which camera to buy my friend I thought it only fair to look at all entry level units just in case I have been blinded by my happiness with my own K10D. My conclusion is that the IQ difference between the entry level Canon 350d, Nikon D40, Olympus 500, and the Pentax K110D is so minimal it is a non issue. The feature sets are slightly different but unless you are into a specific type of photography the variances are also a non issue. The ergonomics vary but all of them are very good and all are acceptable. This leaves price as the deciding factor and I am amazed at the difference. The K110D being the least expensive is 35% less than the most expensive 350D, both with kit lenses. The K110D is 30% less than the D40. It's even 20% less than the Olympus 500. If you move up to the K100D it is still 20% less than the 350D. The pricing I used was from the Buydig site, a reputable online seller.

Since I have a few old lenses I can give her all I need to buy is the body so there is no contest. With this kind of aggressive pricing it is no surprise the K100D is selling so well.
