My understanding of black holes is that they aren't holes at all. They appear that way because their gravity is so intense, nothing, including light can escape from it. So if you were to look at a black hole, you would literally see nothing, or perhaps a black void where nothing seems to be, hence the term hole. The only way a black hole could aid in space transportation would involve using its gravity for a sling shot effect. Of course, misjudge that course and you would end up eventually being sucked in to the black hole, which would undoubtedly ruin your whole day.

The relatively modern day equivalent to the P38 as a plane pilots loved would have to be the A-10 aka Warthog. Not fast nor pretty, but it could take a licking and keep on flying.

Until a means of transporting at extreme speeds and the ability to withstand collisions with even tiny space items are developed, speculation of interstellar space isn't really of much use. Yes, it's fun to speculate but don't get wrapped up too serious in something we'll never see in our lifetime.
